The office door opened with a sound.
"Eugene... wait, why is it you?" Seeing Lorraine, the smile on Elsie's face disappeared.
Lorraine stood up from the sofa and gave her a smile with a hidden meaning. "What a coincidence."
Truthfully, she didn't want to see Elsie at all. She had walked in on Elsie and Henry being intimate in the office last night, and now all she could think of was Elsie's moans.
Lorraine still remembered how Elsie and Henry's bodies had writhed and overlapped like worms, which made her feel sick. She quickly took a deep breath to push down those messy memories.
"What coincidence? This is my boyfriend's office. What's a lowly employee like you doing up here?" Elsie threw the breakfast box in her hand onto the coffee table with a bang, almost splashing the oatmeal out.
Since she had already mentally prepared herself in the office, Lorraine wasn't very scared of her and instead looked straight back at her.
"I don't really know why I came up here," Lorraine said. "I just had breakfast with Eugene this morning, and then he brought me straight here and told me to wait for him."
Elsie was stunned. She saw the hickey on Lorraine's neck, like a well-tended strawberry field, bright red and very noticeable.
She gasped and her face turned a little pale. "You two spent last night together?"
"Yes, we were together last night," Lorraine admitted calmly. "And this morning, we came to work together. Everyone at Moore Group saw us."
She admitted it without any pressure. Seeing Elsie almost faint from frustration made her feel incredibly satisfied. She had never felt this good before.
Elsie's mouth twisted in anger. "But don't forget, you were with his nephew before. Don't even think about taking my place—don't think about anything like that."
Last night, Eugene had told her to let Elsie and the rest of the Shaw family stay arrogant for a while longer. Lorraine hadn't forgotten.
She nodded freely. "I'm not trying to take your place. I'm here today just to do one thing."
"What exactly do you want to do?" Elsie was almost losing her mind.
"I ordered a gift, and I want to give it to Eugene," Lorraine said. "Even though I bought it with his card, it's something I have to give him."
"You even have his card?" Elsie found it hard to believe.
"I've had it for a long time. You know, all those things you wanted to do with him, I've done them all." Lorraine hadn't thought about saying this before, but now it came out very smoothly. "And not just once."
She didn't feel like boasting was wrong. Elsie had acted arrogant in front of her so many times since they were kids. Lorraine just wanted a little payback today.
Elsie's face grew paler and paler. She grabbed the armrest of the sofa tightly. "So what if you've done those things? Does that prove he belongs to you? You're too naive, Lorraine."
Lorraine nodded, as if she totally agreed with her, and said calmly, "That makes sense, but at least, he's willing to do those things with me."
Her expression was calm enough to drive Elsie crazy. That air of indifference was just like Eugene at times.
Lorraine was gradually gaining Eugene's quiet authority, though she was still a bit behind him. Birds of a feather did flock together.
Elsie was furious, her anger turning into a bitter laugh. "You think I won't get the man I want? Eugene will be under my spell sooner or later."
"The men under your spell must be enough to form a whole soccer team by now," Lorraine said coldly.
"What did you say? You—" Elsie stared at her, both shocked and angry. She couldn't understand what Lorraine meant.
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
Lorraine smiled at Elsie. "The thing I ordered has arrived. You might want to step aside; otherwise, they won't be able to bring it in."
Elsie sneered, but inside she was a bit nervous. She watched Lorraine walk over and open the door.
A group of workers in blue uniforms politely handed over a bill. "Hello, may we ask who placed an order for a desk at our store this morning? It's arrived now. The total is 30 thousand dollars. Please sign here."
Hearing the word "desk," Elsie felt a buzzing in her head. She stared fearfully at the old black oak desk.
She didn't understand why Lorraine replaced only this desk and nothing else. She started to suspect Lorraine knew what she had done in this office.
Lorraine signed the receipt without hesitation. Then, the workers professionally set up the desk for her. "Ms. Shaw, is this okay?"
"Yes, it's much cleaner now. Wait." She waved at the workers. "Please help me move the old desk out and throw it away."
"Throw it away?" The workers looked at each other, a bit regretful. "It's such a nice desk, not cheap either. Just throw it away like that?"
They noticed the new desk was almost identical to the old one and were puzzled about what these wealthy customers were thinking.
"That's right. I always felt something was off about that desk. Don't you agree, Elsie?" Lorraine smiled at her. "Maybe they should just chop it up for firewood."
Elsie felt so guilty she almost fainted. She forced herself to look at the old desk. "I-I don't think so. It's a pretty good desk."
"But I always thought it was a bit dirty and old," Lorraine waved her hand dismissively. "Forget it, just burn it."
The workers said no more; after all, the customer was always right. Together, they lifted the old desk and carried it out. At last, only Lorraine and Elsie were left in the office.
Elsie wanted to lash out but didn't dare. She wasn't sure if Lorraine changed the desk because she knew something or just simply wanted a new one.
Besides, even if Lorraine knew what she had done, that didn't mean Eugene knew. Elsie couldn't lose her head and ruin everything for herself.
Lorraine looked at Elsie with a smile. "This new desk is oak too. Want to lie down on it? No, wait, do you want to touch it and feel its quality?"
Elsie quickly shook her head, feeling her temples pounding. She turned and pushed the door open, nearly running away in a panic.
After the door closed, Lorraine covered her chest and let out a breath.
To be honest, this was the first time she had been so forceful—and she was standing up to Elsie, who had bullied her for nearly half her life.
She thought she wouldn't be able to say a word, but it went surprisingly smoothly.
She also knew that if she said these things at the Shaw residence, Elsie would have already lost her temper. The whole family might have even gotten physical with her.
Elsie's patience now was all because of Eugene.
Lorraine wrinkled her nose, thinking Eugene really did attract a swarm of women with all the attention he got.
Just then, her phone on the table vibrated twice. She quickly grabbed it—it was a call from Eugene. She had just been muttering about him behind his back, and now he was calling.
During a break in the meeting, Eugene stood by the window, watching Elsie storm out of the Moore Group's office building, a small smile playing on his lips.
He asked Lorraine on the phone, "Feeling better now?"
Lorraine nodded, then realized he couldn't see her and quickly added, "She was livid. I hinted around a bit, and she got really scared.
"But don't worry, I didn't spill what she did. You told me to let them be arrogant for a little longer."
Eugene chuckled softly. "Good that you feel better."
"Do you think her anger will affect your work?" Lorraine still felt a bit worried.
Eugene didn't seem to mind. "As long as you're relieved, nothing else matters."
His deep, gentle voice was like the best soothing medicine, instantly calming the last little worry in Lorraine's heart.
She quietly smiled. "Elsie probably won't come today. If she does, and she bothers you, just call me to come up and help."
"Okay." He replied softly. It was a shame he was tied up right now and couldn't see her smug expression. He had never seen her look proud before.
Eugene tapped gently on the glass in front of him with his fingertip. Listening to his breath, Lorraine whispered, "I'll head back to work now."
"Alright," he said, then added, "After work, wait for me obediently. Don't go anywhere."
"Okay," Lorraine said softly, feeling her heart soften little by little from his bossy words, a small sweetness blooming inside her.
After hanging up, she went back downstairs to the medical room.
The news that Lorraine and Eugene came to work together that morning had quietly spread through every department. Even Alice now looked at her with a subtle expression.
Shirin was the one who couldn't keep things to herself. After holding it in all night, the moment she saw Lorraine, she dragged her out to the balcony.
"I saw everything last night. And this morning, you two came in together," Shirin said. "Be honest, has Mr. Moore fallen for you?"
Lorraine froze, feeling a warm breeze roll through her chest, suddenly making her blush.
"What are you talking about?" She turned her face away, cheeks red. "Don't jump to conclusions. He asked me to help him deal with Elsie."
Shirin stuck to her point. "Don't be silly. Even I know it's easy for Mr. Moore to handle anyone. To put it bluntly, destroying the Shaw family is like crushing an ant to him—it doesn't need your help at all."
Lorraine's mind went blank. Her feelings became completely tangled.
She didn't believe Eugene could fall in love with her. She thought they had always been just a relationship of using and being used. From the start, he had his own goals, and she only wanted peace.
Her thoughts were messy, but deep down, a small, faint voice told her it wasn't impossible for Eugene to love her.
