Luke called out Jane's name, but received no response. The very woman he had loathed just moments ago now lay before him, battered and bloodied, barely clinging to life. Luke's eyes darkened instantly.
Luke thought coldly, 'What belongs to me stays with me—unless I decide otherwise. No one, absolutely no one, has the right to take it from my hands. Not even Death itself.'
Luke stepped forward, reaching to lift Jane into his arms. Just then, Ella suddenly threw herself forward and desperately clutched at Luke's pant leg.
Ella cried out desperately, "Mr. Drake, don't believe any of this. Please, listen to me... I'm being framed. It was Jane—she knew I was your girlfriend and got jealous. She was so jealous that she set me up just to ruin me.
"Mr. Drake, believe me. I'm the victim, I'm the real victim. I know nothing about this. It was Jane—she set this whole thing up with these guys to frame me. Agh!"
Before Ella could finish her words, Luke delivered a ruthless kick right to her chest, sending her crashing to the ground. Luke shot Ella a cold, narrowed glare. He was furious that Ella still had the nerve to stubbornly cling to her lies.
Luke took in the masked men, the glaring spotlights, the cameras, and even Jane's battered state—every detail screamed what would have happened here if he hadn't shown up with his team.
Luke scoffed. A flicker of disgust passed through Luke's eyes. For the first time, he felt an overwhelming sense of revulsion toward Ella. The feeling was so intense that he even considered making her disappear.
Luke shot Ella a cold look and said, "Pray to whatever god you believe in that Jane makes it through this." He shot Ella an icy glare, then turned away without another glance.
Ella froze in terror under Luke's piercing glare—the first time he'd ever looked at her with such chilling intensity. She had never seen Luke like this before—so cold, so terrifying. His gaze was deadly—as if he could snuff her out in an instant.
Ella stood petrified, trembling from head to toe, barely daring to breathe.
Luke had already bent down and scooped Jane—her breathing so faint it was nearly gone—into his arms. With steady hands, Luke cradled Jane's limp, fragile form.
But the moment his hands made contact with her, Jane trembled weakly, instinctively recoiling as she struggled to break free. She whimpered weakly, "No... don't... don't touch me... Let... me go..."
Luke's face darkened ominously. Then, from his arms, came Jane's faint, breathless voice as she trembled weakly. "Don't... don't touch me... help... help... Call... call the police... arrest... you..."
Jane bit down on her lip, forcing out an agonized, broken whimper from her throat. She could never give in to those bad guys. She must not let Ella get away with it.
Suddenly, it dawned on him—Jane's resistance wasn't directed at him. Luke's eyes darkened slightly with restrained irritation. "Jane, it's me. Luke." Luke leaned in close, his familiar, husky voice softening as he murmured in Jane's ear.
His large hand instinctively gave Jane's back a gentle, reassuring pat. Then he pulled her petite frame tightly into his protective embrace.
That voice belonged to the man she was supposed to be giving the cold shoulder to, but at that moment, Jane somehow felt relieved. She wondered why Luke would be there.
Luke glanced down and saw deep gashes on Jane's forehead and neck, blood streaming steadily from the wounds. The sight of Jane's shocking bloodstains made Luke's heart sink like a stone into icy waters, the weight of it dragging him deeper by the second.
"Jane, hold on. Don't you dare forget—your life is mine. Don't you dare fall asleep." Luke's voice was deep and icy. Comfort wasn't his style—threats came naturally.
But to Jane, his words only cut deeper. Everything hurt. Her whole body was in agony. The pain was excruciating—she couldn't even open her eyes; every breath seared like fire.
Even now, Luke was still ordering her around and threatening me. "It hurts..." Jane whimpered weakly, her voice breaking with pain. "Luke... I can't... hold on... "I... it hurts... so much..."
Jane kept her eyes closed, letting tears trickle down from the corners of her eyes. Her voice, choked with sobs, broke into weak, broken whimpers. Her thoughts swam through the pain. She couldn't tell if it was a dream or reality.
All the pain and humiliation crashed over her at once, and for a moment, she just wanted to break down and sob like a child.
Ultimately, Jane's bloodied tears were what shattered his resolve. Luke finally pulled her into his arms, holding her tight. "Hold on. Jane, I'm taking you home now." For the first time, Luke yielded. "Be good now, we're going home."
