Luke's deep, magnetic voice was like a calming elixir. It resonated deeply in Jane's ears, wrapping her in an unprecedented sense of security.
Jane's trembling slowly subsided. Slowly, little by little, she melted into Luke's familiar, broad embrace, feeling a sense of safety she had never known before.
Luke scooped Jane into his arms, the gentle coaxing from moments ago completely gone, replaced by an icy rage. She was alarmingly light.
Luke hadn't held Jane in his arms for over a week. Now, the petite figure in his embrace felt almost weightless—even lighter than before.
All that effort to help her put on a little weight and improve her anemic condition, and it was all gone again. Luke's dark, brooding brows furrowed fiercely.
He didn't know it was from seeing Jane covered in wounds and bloodstains, or from the burning rage that someone had dared harm his carefully nurtured charge. Instinctively, Luke shielded Jane even closer in his arms and strode out swiftly.
"Mr. Drake, don't go. Please, let me explain," Suddenly coming to her senses, Ella overcame her fear and made a desperate dash after him. But Luke was already striding away with Jane in his arms, never looking back.
Watching Luke's retreating figure, Ella was overwhelmed by sheer terror. She knew that Luke had seen everything. She wondered what her fate would be.
"Mr. Drake, we've notified the private hospital. Their top medical team is standing by, ready to receive Ms. Ritter at any moment," Hayden reported promptly as soon as they got in the car.
"No." Luke glanced down at the petite woman in his arms, his voice cold and low. "We're not going to the hospital. We're going home. Have Mandy prepare the room immediately. Tell Dylan to come in person."
Hayden was a bit baffled. Sure, Jane was covered in blood and looked truly pitiful, but in his experience, this wasn't some complicated case that warranted troubling Dylan.
After all, the doctors at the private hospital were more than competent. Sending Jane there would probably be faster and more convenient.
"Yes, but Mr. Drake, you know what Mr. Powell is like. Even if we go ask him ourselves, it probably won't be easy to get him to come."
Dylan, the heir of the Powell family, was Luke's closest friend, but he was known for his peculiar temperament. Not that Dylan was particularly odd in personality. On the contrary, he was actually very approachable and easy to get along with.
Everyone in Jovinia knew that while Dylan was a brilliant doctor, he had this strange quirk: he only treated those on the verge of death. So getting him to come just to tend to Jane's wounds wouldn't be easy.
Luke said, "Tell Dylan the person he needs to save is my wife. Whether he comes or not, that's his call."
Hayden froze, his eyes widening in shock. 'Wait, is Mr. Drake really going to acknowledge Ms. Ritter's status publicly?' he thought. This was the first time since their marriage that Luke'd shown any intention of introducing her to his social circle.
'But what about Ella?' Hayden was deeply puzzled. Still, he didn't dare ask—he immediately contacted Dylan.
On the penthouse floor, as Luke stepped out of the elevator carrying Jane, he unexpectedly came face-to-face with someone.
"Mr. Drake, what happened?" Daniel, usually so composed, showed rare alarm when he saw Jane. "Why is Ms. Ritter bleeding so much?"
Daniel had come specifically on Dwight's orders. Today, when Dwight was discharged from the hospital, Jane didn't show up, and Luke left in a cold rage. Worried that something might have happened between the young couple, Dwight sent Daniel to check on them.
To Daniel's shock, Dwight's fears were confirmed—he arrived to find Jane in this dreadful state.
Luke had no time for explanations. He simply tightened his hold on the petite woman in his arms, brushed past Daniel without a word, and carefully laid her down on the master bed.
Luke's dark gaze fixed intently on Jane's blood-streaked face. As he took in the lacerations on her neck, forehead, and limbs, the dark intensity in his eyes kept deepening, growing colder and more menacing.
"How much longer until Dylan arrives?" Luke's voice was hoarse, so cold it seemed to freeze the air.
"He's here. Mr. Drake, Dylan is here!"
Hayden called out, his voice brimming with relief and excitement.
