"Dylan, instead of wasting time asking questions, why don't you help her stop the bleeding first? Can't you see she's in pain?" Luke's icy voice cut through Dylan's curiosity. He was running out of patience. With every passing minute, Jane's delicate face grew paler.
Though Luke knew full well of Dylan's medical expertise and that Jane would be perfectly safe under his care, the sight of her weak and pale form still stirred up an inexplicable irritation in his heart.
'It's just a normal reaction when someone damages what's mine,' he thought. After all, only he had the right to hurt what belonged to him. If anyone else did, it was bound to infuriate him.
Dylan answered, "Alright, I'll stop asking. Let me examine her now." Dylan wasn't offended by the cold shoulder. In fact, he wasn't surprised at all by Luke's harsh attitude.
Dylan thought to himself, 'No kidding—just one look at her face and it's crystal clear. With the new Mrs. Drake being such a stunner, no wonder Luke treats her like a priceless treasure.'
Dylan said, "Her injuries are quite severe, but don't worry—I can handle it. Now, if you'll please step out. You know my rule—no bystanders allowed in my operating area."
Luke's gaze turned frosty. But he knew this was indeed one of Dylan's eccentric rules. For all his usual laid-back, irreverent attitude, Dylan was dead serious when it came to his medical practice.
Luke took one last, lingering look at Jane, lying there all alone and looking incredibly fragile. "Dylan, be gentle. She's afraid of pain," he said tightly. His lips pressed into a thin line as he tore his gaze away from Jane and left the room.
With Luke and his men gone, the room held only Dylan and his medical team. The room had long since been transformed into a sterile ward, its cleanliness rivaling that of a hospital operating room.
After changing into his surgical scrubs, Dylan approached the bed, his gaze falling on the delicate woman lying there. He couldn't help but study Jane's face intently.
After he rinsed her wounds with saline solution, Jane's delicate features became even more distinct. Dylan's lips parted slightly as he murmured to himself in a low voice, "Can't believe Luke actually found a woman who looks so much like her."
Outside the door, Luke received a call from an irate Dwight demanding answers. But before Dwight could say a word, he powered off his phone and tossed it to Hayden. "Tell Daniel I'm not taking calls. And tell him to stop snitching to Grandpa."
Luke stood outside, his brooding gaze fixed on the closed door. Behind it, Jane was undergoing surgery. It didn't matter what Jane had done in the past—whether she was dishonest or materialistic. Right now, all Luke cared about was that Jane was safe.
"Daniel, what the hell happened? Jane was perfectly fine—how could she get into such an accident out of nowhere?" Dwight demanded, his voice full of anxiety.
Since Luke refused to answer his calls, Dwight had no choice but to call Daniel instead. Daniel stepped into an empty room and replied in a hushed tone.
"Sir, when Mr. Drake brought Ms. Ritter back, she was already covered in blood. He didn't explain the details, but I'll investigate. Please rest assured—he's called in Mr. Powell, who's operating on her right now."
"Mr. Powell? With him there, Jane should be fine. But how can you expect me not to worry?" Dwight said, his voice tight with concern.
"Jane is such a well-behaved girl—how could something like this happen to her out of the blue? And this isn't even the first time. She was kidnapped before, and now this? There's definitely something fishy going on.
"Daniel, listen carefully: I don't care what methods you use, you must get to the bottom of this. I want to know exactly who dares to lay a finger on my granddaughter-in-law." Dwight was furious.
In his prime, he'd been every bit as ruthless as Luke is now. Only age and illness had lent him this deceptively benevolent veneer. Jane's repeated misfortunes had already made him suspect something fishy was going on behind the scenes.
If anyone dared to lay a hand on Jane, they'd face the full force of Dwight's wrath. He'd show them no mercy.
