The surgery dragged on for what felt like forever—much longer than anyone had initially anticipated.
Hayden tried a few times to persuade Luke to get some rest, saying he could keep watch. But Luke wouldn't leave; his face just grew more and more grim.
Right now, Luke was still standing outside the operating room, waiting anxiously for news about Jane.
Hayden stepped aside to take a call and returned looking troubled.
"Mr. Drake," Hayden said, "Harvey just called. Ms. Judd went to the office looking for you. When she saw you weren't there, she broke down crying, begging Harvey to pass on a message.
"She says she knows she messed up and is asking for your forgiveness. Ms. Judd promised she'd never do it again and pleaded with you to answer her calls."
To be honest, Hayden didn't want to relay Ella's messages at all after everything she had done. But he knew he couldn't decide these things on his own.
After all, no matter how despicable Ella's actions seemed to him, she was still Luke's lifesaver.
How Ella should be dealt with and whether she deserved to be ignored were decisions beyond Hayden's pay grade.
Yet, after Hayden finished speaking, Luke didn't respond at all. He didn't even glance at him as if he hadn't heard a word Hayden had said.
Luke's eyes stayed locked on the closed doors of the operating room. His face was as stern as it could get, clearly at the brink of his endurance.
Hayden couldn't tell if Luke ignored Ella intentionally or if he was just too focused to hear him.
Just as Hayden cleared his throat to report again, the operating room door suddenly opened.
"Dylan, how is she?" Luke took a step forward, his jaw clenched tight and his eyes steely with a cold glint.
For a split second, Dylan had a strange feeling that if he dared say the surgery failed, Luke would lay into him hard.
Dylan cleared his throat. "The surgery was more difficult than I expected.
"Jane has quite a few injuries. Fortunately, we've removed all the glass shards. The other wounds are minor, except for two deeper cuts—one on her forehead and one on her neck. They're tricky to handle and could easily get infected and scarred."
Dylan spoke in a calm tone. Unsurprisingly, Luke's expression grew frostier with each word.
"Don't give me that look," Dylan said. "Since you called me here, you know I won't let such things happen. Don't worry, I've taken care of everything. As long as she's properly cared for, there won't be any scars."
Dylan didn't know the exact nature of the relationship between Jane and Luke. But he could tell just by Luke's urgency that he couldn't stand the thought of Jane's face getting scarred. After all, it's rare to find two people who look so alike.
"Thanks," Luke said curtly and moved to go inside.
"Wait," Dylan called after him.
Luke turned back, his cold eyes filled with impatience.
Dylan continued, "Jane is out of immediate danger, but there's something else I need to tell you."
"What is it?" Luke asked.
"Jane has a unique constitution," Dylan explained. "When I tested her earlier, I found she's allergic to many antibiotics and fever-reducing medications.
"She's suffered multiple injuries, making it easy for her to develop a fever post-surgery. It'd be best to have someone watch over her at night and use physical cooling methods if necessary."
"Physical cooling?" Luke narrowed his eyes.
"Yes," Dylan replied. "Use a damp, cold towel to wipe her body. If her temperature rises at night, remember to use the cold towel to sponge her down thoroughly.
"Make sure to focus on areas like under the arms and the groin, where it's more effective. And keep switching out the towel as it warms up."
Dylan spoke in great detail, but for the first time, a look of confusion crossed Luke's stern face. Luke furrowed his brows and asked in a serious tone, "Groin area?"
Dylan said, "Oh, that's the inner thigh connection. Those areas have the most lymph nodes. If she gets a high fever, you definitely need to apply the cold compress there."
Luke's gaze darkened slightly.
Meanwhile, Hayden thought, 'Does this mean Mr. Drake has to personally attend to Ms. Ritter? And actually has to sponge her down himself?'
