Dylan repeated himself twice, then looked up at Luke. "You got all that, right? Remember to give her the medication after cooling her down. If you have any questions, you can call me."
Dylan treated Luke and Jane as if they were a real couple. Naturally, he assumed that such an intimate task as sponging her entire body, especially involving certain private areas, would be done by Luke himself.
Luke's eyes darkened further, his face chilly. "Hayden, did you get that?"
Hayden quickly replied, "Yes, Mr. Drake, I noted it all down."
Confused, Dylan asked, "Why would you need Hayden to remember this?"
He couldn't believe that Luke would let another man handle such a personal task for someone with Jane's appearance. If Luke were willing, he would have already arranged for a male nurse to stay.
Unfortunately, Dylan's care team was all male. And he couldn't imagine Luke permitting another man to sponge Jane down.
Ignoring Dylan, Luke raised an eyebrow and ordered Hayden, "Make sure Mandy is informed. Tell her everything Dylan just explained."
This clearly meant that Luke had no intention of personally handling the cooling and sponging of Jane's body.
Dylan scratched his nose, suddenly understanding. He thought, 'Of course, someone like Luke wouldn't demean himself for a mere substitute. I was mistaken.'
Dylan added, "Alright, let the maid take good care of Jane. I should've known better; a fake is not the real thing—you wouldn't personally attend to her."
Although Dylan's words might have held some truth, his carefree smile and the comment itself grated on Luke's nerves and felt strangely jarring.
Luke said, "Stay out of things that don't concern you. Hayden, show him out."
Dylan protested, "Hey, what's with you? You're just kicking me out after you got what you needed..."
After Dylan was sent away, Mandy was quickly called in to watch over Jane. Since Jane was in Luke's room, Luke slept in the neighboring room that night.
Just as Dylan had predicted, Jane began to show signs of a fever in the middle of the night. Mandy discovered this and reluctantly started her work.
Though she was unhappy about it, Mandy fetched a basin of cold water to sponge Jane down.
Mandy had no respect for Jane and didn't see her as the lady of the house.
While she didn't dare let Jane's fever rage unchecked, she also wasn't above slacking off or causing trouble under the guise of caring for her.
She thought, 'It's not like Mr. Drake truly cares about her. It's just me here in the middle of the night. As long as she doesn't die of a fever, who's gonna know how I handled her care?'
With that thought, Mandy soaked a towel in the cold water, wrung it out lightly, and unbuttoned Jane's pajamas, reaching inside.
Swift and rough motions followed, the coarse towel scraping over Jane's feverish skin with intentional force, leaving red marks on her shoulders and chest.
Mandy thought angrily, 'I can't stand Jane's attitude. She's not the real lady of this house—just some woman who came in with nothing but a plastic bag. Why should she get to stay in the master bedroom?
'And more than that, why should I have to make fancy tonics for her every day on Mr. Drake's orders? Does she even deserve it?'
Her anger mounting, Mandy grabbed at the waistband of Jane's pajama pants, ready to pull them down. At that moment, the door suddenly opened.
