Half-conscious, Jane felt a stream of cool water flowing down her throat. Her throat burned, her body ached all over, and the dryness in her mouth had long since become unbearable.
Just then, the water soothed her throat like a desert wanderer stumbling upon an oasis. For a brief moment, the fog in her overheated mind cleared.
But right after the cool water, her lips were filled with something far more familiar: an intense, masculine scent. Like cold pine from a snowy mountain, laced with a hint of smoke, it filled her mouth completely.
A wave of fear crept over Jane. She wanted to escape that overwhelming presence, but a firm hand seemed to press against the back of her head, holding her in place. Even her waist felt burning hot, like flames licking her skin.
'Why am I still being tormented when I'm already so miserable? Why won't anyone just leave me alone?' Jane thought. "No..." she whimpered, tears welling up. "M-Mom..."
Jane suddenly burst into tears, her voice trembling with pain, sobs full of resistance. It instantly halted Luke's movements.
He looked down at Jane in his arms with a frown. She was now crying like a heartbroken child. Her clear rejection made a sharp glint flash in his eyes.
Mandy watched gleefully, waiting for Jane to be put in her place. But to her surprise, even with Luke's expression dark enough to pour rain, he still didn't push Jane away.
Luke stared at Jane's tear-streaked face, his eyes shifting uncertainly. No matter how harsh he was, he never meant to push Jane this far.
His eyes flickered as he released his hold on Jane's chin. His rough fingertips gently brushed her flushed lips. Tear-streaked and still sobbing, Jane seemed to carry a heavy burden even in her sleep.
To be honest, this woman was incredibly delicate. Luke's large hand gently stroked Jane's tear-streaked face, with his fingertips lingering near the corner of her eyes, ready to wipe away her tears.
Through her sobs, Jane whispered another man's name. "Colin..." Her murmurs sounded like both a quiet complaint and a lover's sweet tease, clear and soft.
The room's subtle tension vanished instantly. Luke's eyes gleamed cold under the light. Nearby, Mandy gasped, covering her mouth in shock at the name Jane whispered. Luke's chilling presence froze the air, making it hard to breathe.
Luke gripped Jane's chin again, his long fingers slowly tracing and tightening their hold. This time, his expression lost its leniency, replaced by deeper, more guarded scrutiny.
His fingers slowly tightened, pressing hard enough to leave red marks on Jane's pale chin. Though unconscious, the pain made her furrow her brows, a faint tear welling at the corner of her eye.
Luke's lips curled into a barely noticeable, cold smirk. Suddenly, he released the crushing grip on her chin. "Take care of Mrs. Drake." His deep voice echoed in the room, cold, without warmth.
Luke didn't even glance back at Jane. Without hesitation, he left the room. Watching his cold departure, Mandy sighed in relief, exhausted, then closed the door behind her.
Her eyes landed on Jane lying on the bed, and suddenly she realized—Jane was completely out of favor now.
