For the next two days, Luke didn't show up. He moved out of the apartment, acting like he'd forgotten there was a seriously hurt woman still needing care at home.
Soon, the news reached Dwight. He demanded to confront his grandson, but when he went to Luke's company, he was turned away and not allowed to enter.
Dwight got so angry that he was rushed to the hospital, with Daniel staying overnight to watch over him. Hayden tried to speak several times but swallowed his words after seeing Luke's dark, brooding face.
That day, Hayden rushed in, looking pale and anxious. "Mr. Drake, it's serious. Ms. Ritter, she's barely holding on." As soon as he finished, Luke at his desk lifted his deep, unreadable eyes.
Under Luke's icy glare, Hayden's voice quivered. "It was Mandy reporting. Ms. Ritter hasn't had a single drop to drink or taken any medicine for days. She's running a high fever. Mandy says Jane's condition; she's mostly unconscious."
"Get the car ready." Luke paused only a second before standing up. "Send Dylan over." His voice was deeper and colder than before, his face grim as he strode out. Hayden suddenly realized—Luke was going to see Jane.
Soon, the car stopped below the apartment. As Luke stepped inside, a piercing scream echoed from the second floor. His brow furrowed, and his expression turned as cold and distant as an iceberg.
They saw Mandy dragged down the stairs by Daniel, who held her by the collar. Seeing Luke, Daniel's face turned serious. "Mr. Drake, I just got here and caught her sneaking around your room, stealing things.
"Mrs. Drake warned me to keep an eye on Mandy. But I've been busy at the hospital and forgot. Leaving Mandy alone in the apartment gave her a chance to slip up. I'm afraid Mrs. Drake's condition worsened because Mandy neglected her on purpose."
Daniel was sent by Dwight, so he wouldn't falsely accuse a servant. But after hearing him, Luke's face darkened. He recalled that cold, condescending night when he was sure Jane had stolen something upstairs.
At that moment, a flicker of shock and pain crossed Jane's face, and then she burst into tears. But as she cried, she refused to explain further, seeming to accept his accusation. He firmly believed she was a greedy, dishonest woman.
Mandy cried out, "N-No. Mr. Drake, I've been framed! You have to believe me. I've served the Drake family for years; never done anything like this. It's Daniel. He saw Mrs. Drake was unwell and needed someone to blame.
"I swear I did my best to care for her. It wasn't on purpose. Mrs. Drake wouldn't eat or drink, and no matter how I tried, I couldn't get her to take her meds. That's why the fever never broke.
"Mr. Drake, please, you have to believe me. I've worked for you for so many years, always loyal. When have I ever messed up like this? If I ever dared steal from you, may I get hit by a bus the moment I walk out."
Mandy wailed at the top of her lungs, swearing at the skies. She struggled free from Daniel's grip, crawling toward Luke, trying to clutch his pant leg and beg for forgiveness.
The more desperately she pleaded her innocence, the colder Luke's expression grew. Choking back sobs, Jane pleaded, "Mr. Drake, you have to believe me. Please, believe me."
Luke's eyes were icy as he kicked Mandy away without hesitation. She hit the floor, wailing in pain, but there wasn't the slightest trace of warmth in Luke's gaze.
Luke's voice was cold as ice when he ordered, "Daniel, retrieve the surveillance footage from the second floor. And tell Dylan, if he isn't here within ten minutes, there's no need for him to show up again."
A chill clung to Luke like a storm cloud, his presence freezing. But when he went upstairs, opened the door, and saw weak Jane on the bed. Only then did the rage in his eyes begin to fade.
"Jane," Luke stepped closer, taking her limp hand in his. His voice was low, hoarse. "Don't even think about leaving me. Not unless I say you can."
