Jane felt like she was dying as she wondered, ' Maybe I am already dead. Otherwise, how could I be seeing this hazy vision of me, Mom, and Dad—all three of us sitting together as a happy family, everything so peaceful and perfect?
'How could I be seeing that Colin has never betrayed me and is still by my side?'
As if all those misfortunes from the past had never happened at all.
Yet, despite the beauty before her, Jane felt only a crushing sense of suffocation and unbearable pain. Every breath burned, her throat searing with pain. Every breath felt like razor blades scraping her throat raw.
"Ugh, hurts." As the pain reached its peak, a faint, almost inaudible whimper escaped Jane's lips. Then, a cool, refreshing liquid trickled past her lips.
That familiar yet strange, domineering scent of cold pine enveloped her. It silenced her delicate whimpers, yet brought waves of cool relief washing over her.
Not even in her dreams, when she saw her father or Colin, had this cool, aloof scent ever brought her such comfort.
Whenever the pain became unbearable and she was on the verge of collapse, that cool pine-scented presence would transform into a refreshing spring, gently flowing past her lips. It soothed her to the very core.
For the first time, Jane realized maybe there was someone out there who could make her feel even warmer than her dad or Colin, who both abandoned her, ever did.
After two days, Jane slowly regained consciousness, enveloped in soothing warmth.
Jane's eyes flew open. Something felt wrong. The entire room was draped in black.
'Wait? Am I actually lying on Luke's massive king-sized bed right now?' she wondered.
Jane blinked a few times, raising a hand to shield her eyes from the light; for a moment, her eyes couldn't adjust to the brightness in the room.
Through her bleary vision, she could faintly make out a figure standing by the window. It looked like Luke.
'No, it can't be Luke,' Jane thought in disbelief. 'Luke clearly didn't want—'
"Ms. Ritter is awake. Mr. Drake, Ms. Ritter has woken up. I'll go inform Mr. Powell right away," someone called out excitedly.
Hayden's slightly excited voice snapped Jane back to reality. This was no hallucination.
The moment the door clicked shut, the tall, imposing figure by the window turned around. It was Luke.
Jane didn't have time to avert her gaze, and her gaze plunged deep into the abyss of Luke's eyes.
Her breath hitched. Jane's voice was barely audible, as faint and fragile as a newborn kitten's mewl. "Lu-Luke,"
Jane murmured tremulously, whispering his name from between her lips, her voice laced with uncertainty.
For a moment, she couldn't even recall how she'd ended up in Luke's bed.
Jane distinctly remembered that Luke hadn't been back to this apartment in ages.
While Daniel was away caring for Dwight, Jane took it upon herself to move out of Luke's bedroom. They hadn't seen each other for as long as Luke had been giving her the cold shoulder.
The last time they spoke, it was just Luke calling to inform her that Dwight was being discharged from the hospital, ordering her to show up on time and play her role as the dutiful granddaughter-in-law.
At that moment, Jane remembered that after hesitating for what felt like an eternity, she finally gathered the courage to whisper, "Luke, would you come with me to see my mom?"
However, she was only to be met with Luke's cold, mocking laughter. "Don't overestimate yourself," he sneered.
Jane's eyes darkened momentarily. She still didn't know how to face Luke.
But in the next instant, Luke gripped her chin firmly, tilting her delicate face upward.
"Awake? Hurt anywhere?" Luke's slender fingers lightly brushed her cheek as he gazed down, his voice low and gentle.
