Jane finally remembered—at her most desperate, most humiliated, and most helpless, it was Luke, the man standing before her now, who had appeared and come to her rescue.
Last time, in the alley across from A University, Jane thought she had been so disoriented that she hallucinated it was Luke who saved her.
But this time, everything that happened at the Crystal Palace remained clear in her memory.
It was Luke. If he hadn't shown up and taken her away that day, she might not even be alive now.
Jane raised her trembling eyes, gazing at the man before her with a look both complicated and conflicted.
She feared him. She knew she shouldn't let herself harbor any hope. Yet in that moment, an uncontrollable ripple stirred deep in her heart as if it were for Luke.
Little did Jane know that when her eyes were rimmed with red and she looked up at Luke with those wet, helpless eyes, all Luke could think was to devour her whole.
Luke's deep eyes gleamed with an unfathomable depth.
"Jane?" He suddenly called her name, tilting her chin up with his fingers. His deep voice carried an undercurrent of restrained emotion.
"W-what?" Jane let out a startled. She had no idea why Luke had suddenly leaned in so close, or what he was about to say.
All she could feel was the burning heat of his fingertips against her jawline.
Luke paused for a few seconds, his dark eyes locked on her beautiful yet pale face. His lips parted slightly as he murmured, "You—"
The door suddenly burst open. "Hey. I heard Mrs. Drake's awake. Quick, let me see.
"Hey, Mrs. Drake. I'm Dylan Powell, second in the family. Call me Dylan if you want. Damn, you're even prettier awake than asleep. No wonder Luke picked you. Hey, don't worry. I'm here to check on you."
Dylan's sudden arrival shattered the charged atmosphere in the room.
Jane hastily pulled away from Luke's embrace, not daring to meet his eyes again, her gaze fixed on the floor.
Flushed crimson with embarrassment, she could only sit there as Dylan began checking her vital signs.
Due to Dylan's medical examination, Luke was politely asked to step out temporarily. At last, Jane was left alone with her thoughts.
She had just woken up, her mind still in a haze, only now starting to clear.
'So, after I have been unconscious for so long and vanished without a trace, what about Mom? Mom hasn't seen me in ages. Is she worried sick? Could it affect her mood, or even her upcoming surgery?' she thought.
Jane didn't dare think about it any further, not even having time to worry about herself. All she wanted was to get better soon, so she could go see Rose.
Outside the door, Harvey, the second assistant, hurried over, looking anxious. "Mr. Drake, Ms. Judd is making a scene at the company again," he reported.
Seeing Luke's eyes darken, Harvey braced himself and continued. "Ms. Judd heard you still refuse to see her, so she's threatening to stand at the company entrance until you agree.
"It's pouring outside. If she really does it, things could get out of hand. If the Mr. and Mrs. Drake find out, it could get complicated."
Harvey suppressed his impatience as he reported on Ella. At this point, he was completely speechless about her.
'Does she really think she can get away with making such a scene in front of Mr. Drake? She's utterly shameless,' Harvey fumed inwardly.
"Mr. and Mrs. Drake?" Luke didn't even bother to look up, his lips curling into a cold smirk, as if mocking Ella for overestimating herself. "Let her be there all she wants if that's what she likes. I don't bow to threats."
Luke's voice was icy and detached, the tone utterly flat as if it meant nothing to him.
He had already shown Ella more than enough patience. If she still refused to repent and kept up her antics, he wouldn't hold back.
"Also, tell Ella that if she still wants to be my wife, she'd better learn to behave herself. I'll marry her as promised in a year. But for now, keep her out of my way," he warned.
