                    "W-What happened?" Jane asked curiously.
Luke said coolly, "She was stealing from the house. While you were unconscious, I had her handed over to the police."
Jane froze for a second. She had indeed doubted Mandy's character before. But she never imagined that while she was unconscious, Mandy would actually be caught red-handed and handed over to the police so quickly.
'Wait a minute,' Jane exclaimed inwardly. Her thoughts suddenly skipped a beat. 'If Mandy had already been handed over to the police while I was unconscious, then who was changing my clothes during that time?'
She vaguely remembered someone bathing her while she was half-conscious. The burning heat of that person's fingertips gliding over her skin—
Jane instantly felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment. Mandy hadn't been there. Suddenly, Jane realized that the only person who could have bathed her while she was unconscious was Luke.
Her thick lashes trembled even more as she lowered her gaze, unable to meet the eyes of the man across from her.
"Jane," Luke's deep voice suddenly came from across the table, "if you're ever wrongly accused again, remember to speak up."
"Wrongly accused? What?" Jane asked, her voice tinged with confusion. Her face was still flushed with lingering warmth, leaving her momentarily at a loss.
"There are surveillance cameras in the room on the second floor. They captured not only Mandy stealing money, but also you going upstairs that night," Luke said.
At that, Luke lifted his deep, fathomless eyes and locked his gaze onto her. His voice dropped, deep and unreadable, as he murmured, "That night, thank you."
Jane was stunned for a moment, wondering, 'Did Luke just thank me?'
Jane's nose tingled with a sudden ache. Her voice, slightly hoarse from both fluster and lingering embarrassment, stammered, "D-Don't mention it. I-I just happened to hear a noise.
"At the nursing home, that's my job all the time. I didn't really think much about it."
She was practically babbling, completely unable to string her words together.
Everything happened so fast. Even though things between her and Luke had been going well lately, she had never imagined she'd hear him say thank you.
That simple word seemed to make up for all the wrongful treatment she'd endured before.
"Have your breakfast. The soup is getting cold," Luke said, lowering his gaze and avoiding her eyes.
But the corners of his lips, usually pressed into a stern line, had softened into the faintest hint of a smile.
Seizing the moment when the atmosphere at the table was pleasant, Jane spoke up cautiously, "By the way, Mr. Drake, I have something to take care of today. Would it be alright if I went out for a bit?"
"Where are you going?" Luke asked. As expected, his brows furrowed slightly, clearly showing his disapproval of her going out so soon after recovering.
"I—" Jane hesitated, her hands clenching tightly as she pressed her lips together.
Jane recalled how Luke had scoffed at her the last time she mentioned her mother. Her fingers unconsciously twisted tighter in her lap.
Jane said softly, "I want to go to the hospital to visit my mom."
Across the table, Luke's brows paused for a moment. Then, his deep, cool voice broke the silence. "Hayden, get the car ready. We are going to the hospital."
'He is going to the hospital, too?' Jane thought, stunned. Her lashes fluttered involuntarily as she heard Luke's words.
Jane bit her lip and looked up at him, her eyes wide with disbelief.
'Does this mean he's really willing to go with me to visit Mom at the hospital?' she wondered, her heart pounding.
"Mr. Drake, are you really coming to the hospital with me?" Jane stammered, her voice full of uncertainty. Afraid she might be getting the wrong idea, Jane couldn't help but ask again, needing confirmation.
Luke didn't answer. Instead, he calmly picked up his napkin and wiped the corner of his mouth, his expression as composed as ever.
"You have twenty minutes to change and get ready. Mrs. Drake, I'll be waiting in the car," Luke said. He then stood up and left the dining room.
Watching Luke's inscrutable back as he turned and walked away, Jane was suddenly struck by a strange thought.
'Did he just make an excuse to leave because he couldn't answer my question?' she wondered. 'So, is Luke actually shy? No way.'
In a flash, Jane dismissed that ridiculous speculation.
'Mr. Drake, with his aloof and ruthless demeanor, has weathered far greater storms than this. How could he possibly be shy of a question from me? I must be overthinking this,' she wondered.
Jane went upstairs, planning to change into her own clothes.
But after rummaging through the entire walk-in closet, she was shocked to discover that the few outfits she had were all gone, thrown out without a trace.
