Luke's cold words cut deep.
Jane took a deep breath, refusing to let it hurt. She stayed quiet to avoid more shame. Then she slowly unbuttoned her coat and pulled off her gray sweater.
In a flash, Jane was left in her black strapless bra, hugging her curves. She slipped on the new dress quickly. It took two minutes, but it felt like forever.
Finally, she was done. "I'm ready," she whispered, looking up.
Luke glanced sideways coldly. He saw Jane with her hair down, face flushed pink. The light blue and pearl-white dress showed off her gentle charm.
His brow furrowed. The image of Jane—taking off her coat, wearing a black strapless bra that made her skin glow—flashed through his mind. He caught himself and scowled.
"Done? Get out," he said coldly, taking off the car immediately.
Jane saw Luke's eyes go dark suddenly. She wondered what she'd done to piss him off. She'd done what he said—why was he still mad? He was such a mood swinger.
Jane sighed and followed him out, reluctantly. They stepped into the elevator, one after the other. When the doors opened again, Jane stopped. Luke, who'd been so cold a minute ago, suddenly pulled her into a hug.
Jane froze in his arms.
His arms were strong. He held her waist tight, and it felt weirdly familiar. With a little effort, he could break her in half. This trapped feeling reminded her of that night at Night Charm Club.
She instantly thought of the guy who pinned her to the door there. Jane squirmed nervously and said, her voice shaking, "I can handle this..."
"Pretending to be Mrs. Drake for Grandpa is your job. Jane, calm down and don't make a fuss," Luke warned coldly. He thought she was just trying to trick him into something.
Jane hunched her shoulders. She saw the disdain in his eyes. She wasn't exactly innocent, so acting nervous seemed fake. She looked down and stayed quiet.
Seeing her calm down, Luke pulled her close and opened the VIP suite door. Then he greeted the man in the room. "Grandpa."
Dwight turned his head away, refusing to look at Luke. "Humph, why are you here? I'm not going to the hospital. And I don't want to see you. I'll die here before seeing any Drakes."
Jane smiled helplessly and called out, "Dwight."
Hearing the familiar voice, Dwight turned around immediately. "Jane? Jane, what are you doing here with Luke?!" Dwight, who'd been upset in the suite, saw Jane and his eyes lit up.
Dwight had been feeling low lately. His favorite nurse, Jane, hadn't shown up for days. And his grandson Luke hadn't agreed to his requests either.
"Jane is my wife, so she came with me," Luke said, sitting by Dwight's bed with his arm around Jane. He gave Dwight a cool look.
Dwight widened his eyes. "What? Wife? You mean..."
"We just got married a few days ago," Luke added calmly.
Dwight gasped, more happy than surprised. He'd thought Luke would say no forever, but Luke moved fast—even getting married so quickly.
"Jane, call him Grandpa from now on," Luke said, giving her waist a little squeeze that made her shiver.
Jane's face turned red, and his touch made her waist burn. She murmured shyly, "Gr... Grandpa."
"Oh, sweetie." Dwight grinned. "I didn't know about your relationship before, so I didn't have time to get you a gift."
Jane refused him. "No, Dwight, emm, Grandpa. I'm really happy with your blessing. Please, you don't need to spend anything extra."
"That won't do. A wedding gift is needed," Dwight insisted.
Thankfully, with Jane's firm refusal, Dwight finally respected her and dropped the idea.
"Heh, you little rascal, see how great Jane is as your wife. When I told you to marry her, you were sulky..." Dwight beamed as he watched Luke gently holding Jane.
Although Luke still looked cold and blank, Dwight knew this was rare for him—getting close to a woman. He chuckled and asked, "So, I didn't lie to you, right? Didn't I tell you Jane is wonderful?"
"You've got a good eye, old man," Luke said, his voice flat. He didn't argue with Dwight, but he didn't give Jane direct praise either.
"You kid..." Dwight grumbled, frowning. Luke just didn't get the hint. He wanted Luke to praise Jane, not just nod along.
Dwight waved Luke off. "Forget it. You go first. I need to talk to Jane alone."
Luke's brow twitched almost unnoticeably. He gave Jane a cold, warning glance before getting up and leaving.
Once Luke was gone, Dwight took Jane's hand. "Jane, tell me straight. Did you really marry him? Or did he just fake a marriage certificate to trick me?"
