All that was left in the walk-in closet were the luxurious purple outfits Luke had chosen for her.
Jane frowned slightly. 'Luke really does have a thing for me in purple. He didn't even leave me a single piece of my own clothes.'
Jane had no choice but to reluctantly select another presentable purple dress from the wardrobe and slip into it.
In front of the mirror, Jane applied a light coat of soft pink lipstick, then headed downstairs.
Luke sat in the car, eyes closed in feigned repose. As soon as he heard the car door open, Luke turned his head, his icy gaze landing on Jane.
Luke couldn't take his eyes off Jane. Her delicate face was lightly made up, her perfect lips tinted a soft pink. Her long hair flowed like silk, every movement graceful and light.
In particular, it was that purple dress that transformed her. She looked as if she had stepped out of a dream.
For a fleeting moment, Luke thought he saw the shadow of someone else in Jane.
"Come here." Luke's voice dropped to a husky murmur as he extended his hand toward her.
Jane paused in her tracks. Her gaze fell upon the large, black leather-gloved hand that Luke extended toward her.
She pressed her lips together briefly, then obediently placed her left hand into his broad palm.
"Good girl." Luke pulled her into his embrace and planted a gentle kiss on the crown of her head as a reward.
Jane was not used to Luke being this affectionate, her body tensing slightly.
'Was it just my imagination, or had Luke seemed a little less cold and harsh ever since he rescued me from the Crystal Palace?' Jane wondered, sensing a subtle change in his demeanor.
"Mr. Drake, would you really accompany me to the hospital?" Jane asked softly, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
Luke shot her a cold look. "What? You don't trust me?"
Jane hesitated, at a loss for words. She didn't dare say she didn't believe him, worried he might take back his promise.
Luke's inscrutable gaze rested on her face; his tone was flat and unreadable. "Jane, since you're injured, I suppose I can give you a little something in return."
Luke said coldly, "Of course, this is just a transaction between us. Grandpa was hospitalized because of you and is recuperating there. After you visit your mother, accompany me to see him."
At Luke's words, Jane finally relaxed.
'I knew it,' Jane thought. 'Luke would never be nice to me for no reason. Of course, he wants something in return.'
Luke would accompany Jane to visit her mother, and in return, she had to pretend to be his wife in front of Dwight.
'Quid pro quo—that's more like it,' Jane mused.
"Of course, we should visit Dwight. Don't worry. I'll behave perfectly.
"I'll play the role of your dutiful wife in front of him," Jane said, her tone both obedient and a little sly, even the slight tension in her brows and eyes melting into soft compliance.
Luke's eyes flashed with irritation as he watched Jane suddenly relax. 'Jane? Good. You're really something,' he wondered.
Jane looked at Luke nervously. "Mr. Drake, did I say something wrong?"
She keenly noticed a flicker of icy coldness beneath the steely gaze in Luke's eyes.
Jane worried that she might have said something wrong and upset Luke. 'What if he refuses to cooperate when we meet Mom?' she wondered.
Summoning her courage, Jane leaned in with uncharacteristic docile initiative. Her fingers tentatively hooked onto the sleeve of Luke's suit.
"Mr. Drake, if I said something wrong just now, don't be mad, okay? I promise I'll behave myself later." Her voice was soft and pleading.
When she looked up, her dewy eyes were gentle and radiant. Even her sensual fragrance was exactly the kind that drove men wild.
It was the first time Luke had ever seen Jane act so sweetly coquettish. His cold, deep eyes darkened dangerously.
In the next instant, Luke seized Jane's sexy waist and pinned her down onto the plush leather seat in the back of the car.
"Jane, you asked for this," Luke growled, his voice thick with danger.
