A black Bentley had been parked outside the hospital ward for an unusually long time, yet no one got out. Only after over half an hour did there finally come the first signs of movement from within.
The pale pink lipstick on Jane's lips had been completely kissed off by Luke.
Her delicate face flushed crimson, and she didn't dare to look up at the man beside her. Head bowed, she quietly adjusted her clothes, looking a bit aggrieved.
Jane had never met a man like Luke before.
'How could he be so bold and domineering, acting as if nothing else mattered?' she thought.
He didn't care that they were in public, with his driver sitting right in front—he simply tilted her chin and kissed her in the back seat.
Fortunately, Luke's driver was as discreet as ever, immediately raising the partition as if he hadn't seen or heard a thing. Otherwise, Jane was honestly too embarrassed to get out of that car.
At that moment, a line of tall, black-suited bodyguards stood at attention outside the car.
The tallest among them, his face impassive, stepped forward and respectfully opened the door for Jane.
Seeing her chance to exit, Jane didn't dare stay another moment with Luke. Without hesitation, she wrapped her coat tighter and hurried out of the car.
Unfortunately, in her haste to get out, Jane stumbled over something at her feet and nearly tumbled out of the car.
Before she could even gasp, one of the black-suited bodyguards outside swiftly caught her.
With practiced professionalism, he simultaneously raised a hand to shield her head from hitting the car door frame.
Still shaken, Jane instinctively looked up with her soft, luminous eyes and said gently, "Thank you."
The black-suited bodyguard stiffened in surprise. No one had ever thanked them, let alone looked at them directly in the eye with such sincere gratitude.
A faint blush crept across his tanned face as he met Jane's glistening, gentle gaze; for a moment, his usual stoic expression nearly crumbled.
In the next moment, Jane's hand was suddenly seized by a strong, possessive grip.
Luke had already emerged from the car without her even noticing. His tall, aloof figure stepped between her and the other man as he pulled her into his arms with an icy glare.
"Jane, stay close. Stop looking around," Luke ordered coldly.
"Huh?" Jane was baffled by what Luke meant.
'Haven't I been right by his side this whole time?' she wondered. 'And when did I ever 'look around?'
The stone-faced bodyguard who had just steadied Jane quietly stepped aside, a cold sweat breaking out on his back.
Meanwhile, Jane, still clueless about having almost gotten someone punished, obediently nestled in Luke's arms, letting him lead her into the hospital.
With Jane still nestled in Luke's arms, the two entered Rose's hospital room, the picture of an intimate couple.
"Jane, you're finally here. Do you know how worried I've been these past few days without you?" Rose said anxiously. "Wait? Who is this gentleman?"
Rose was startled by the tall, imposing figure standing next to Jane.
"Mom, h-he's my—" Jane hesitated, her voice trailing off.
Luke had only tacitly agreed to come with her to visit her mom in the hospital. He'd never actually promised to go along with this charade.
'What if he refuses to cooperate? If I introduce him and he gives Mom the cold shoulder right then and there, what am I supposed to do then?' she wondered.
"I'm Jane's husband," Luke said, his deep, steady voice cutting through Jane's hesitation. "Ms. Ritter, my apologies. I was away on business and not in Jovinia.
"I just got back today, and when Jane told me you'd woken up, I came with her to visit. These are some gifts for you."
Though his expression was calm, Luke's attitude toward Rose was unexpectedly gentle and respectful. He took a large bundle of gifts from Hayden and handed them over.
Jane shot Luke a disbelieving glance.
'He actually admitted out loud that he's my husband? And he was even so kind to Mom? What's more, he even brought extra gifts for the occasion.' Jane's eyes glistened with disbelief as she wondered, 'This can't be the same Luke I know.'
