Jane's mother exclaimed, "So what Jane said was all true. When she told me last time that she got married, I didn't believe her. Oh dear, it's so surprising.
"Well, as long as Jane has gotten a good husband, as her mom, I can finally relax."
Rose's composure broke, her eyes welling up with tears. She had always assumed Jane was just bluffing when she said she was getting married.
Rose thought, 'Even if Jane really did get married, it must have been just to pay for my treatment. She probably forced herself to marry some filthy rich old geezer.'
But today, it was only when she saw Luke in person that Rose realized her daughter hadn't compromised herself at all. In fact, Jane had actually married such a wonderful, young, and promising man.
Rose thought to herself, 'He really does have that composed, refined air—handsome and distinguished at first glance. Anyone can see he's young, accomplished, and clearly on the rise.'
Most importantly, he showed not the slightest impatience or disdain toward Rose, who had been bedridden for so long.
Instead, he treated her with gentle respect, and when he looked at Jane, his eyes revealed an unmistakable tenderness.
Even if Rose wasn't the best judge of character, she could still see that her son-in-law genuinely cherished Jane. This was what pleased Rose the most.
"Thanks for your gifts. Come and sit down. Oh, wait. Jane, you haven't introduced him yet. How should I address him?" Rose said.
"Mom, he is—" Jane's voice trailed off, faltering as she struggled to find the right words. She really had no idea how her mom should address Luke.
Luke's name alone represented the pinnacle of nobility in Jovinia's elite circles.
Having once moved in Jovinia's socialite circles, Rose was, of course, no stranger to his reputation.
'If Mom knew I'd married the formidable and untouchable Mr. Drake, the man everyone in elite circles both fears and reveres, she'd probably be scared out of her wits,' Jane thought. 'Mom might even start doubting whether this marriage is real.'
"Ms. Ritter, just call me Luke." Unexpectedly, Luke's deep, cool voice came from beside her, carrying an air of calm detachment.
Luke? Jane turned her head, her sparkling eyes widening in even greater surprise as she stared at Luke. She hadn't expected Luke to be so kind to her mother.
Luke remained completely unfazed as he casually took a seat beside Jane, his hand curving naturally around her waist.
Jane froze. Feeling awkward, she instinctively edged slightly to the side.
"Sweetheart, Ms. Ritter is watching," he whispered huskily into her ear.
His deep, gentle breaths brushed against her earlobes, making Jane's cheeks flush before she even realized it.
Jane's face blushed crimson, too embarrassed to move a muscle, but in Rose's eyes, it painted an entirely different picture.
Rose had, of course, once suspected that her daughter had just found some handsome young man to put on an act for her.
But the way they acted around each other was so naturally close and familiar. It just didn't feel fake at all. With that, the last of Rose's worries finally melted away.
When Jane mentioned that she had arranged her mother's surgery in just a few days, for the first time, Rose nodded in agreement, no longer objecting.
Rose said, "Well, it's good. With Luke by your side, I can rest easy now. Since there's a real chance this surgery might succeed, I want to give it a try.
"If it works out, maybe I'll get to live a few more years, see you and Luke have a baby, and maybe even help out with the little one someday. But even if it fails, I will have no regrets.
"At least I know you have someone who truly cares about you. Even if I'm not here anymore, I won't have to worry."
"Mom, don't say such things." Jane's eyes welled up with tears, her nose stinging. She couldn't bear to hear her mother talk like that.
But as if she had prepared for this moment, Rose didn't even glance at Jane. Instead, she turned to face Luke, who was standing nearby. Her expression grew serious as she looked at him. "Luke, there's something I must entrust to you."
