The moment Jane stepped through the door that evening, Luke pinned her against the foyer cabinet.
Luke buried his face in Jane's delicate neck, planting kiss after kiss. Each one landed with a scorching sting.
Jane didn't even need to look. She could already feel dark red marks blooming across her shoulders and neck.
Jane lifted her eyes, a hint of confusion in them, wanting to catch a glimpse of Luke's expression. 'Why does he act like this the moment he gets home?' she wondered.
But from her angle, all she could see was the taut, cold line of his jaw, so sharp and unyielding.
Above that, his lashes were lowered, fluttering as if they could brush right against her heart. So effortlessly, he drew her in, irresistibly captivating.
"Why didn't you tattle to Grandpa?" Luke's voice was husky, laced with a strange, inexplicable allure.
Jane, dazed from Luke's kisses, murmured softly, "I-I didn't really have anything to complain about."
Jane thought to herself, 'Isn't Ella his girlfriend? Would he really let her complain to Dwight about her?'
Jane might be naive, but she wasn't foolish enough to think she could fight a losing battle. 'With Luke around,' she thought, 'there's no way I can actually complain to Dwight.'
Rather than falling out with Luke over Ella, it was smarter to just play along for now and wait until her mom's surgery was over—then she could settle the score.
Jane forced a gentle smile, masking her deep resentment as she said in a honeyed voice, "I know Ms. Judd is your girlfriend. She misunderstood us, and I should apologize. Complaining? No way."
"Okay." Luke offered no explanation, simply reaching out to pinch Jane's delicate chin.
"Good girl," Luke murmured softly. He tilted his head and gently took her earlobe between his teeth. The gesture carried more reassurance than seduction, a reward rather than a come-on.
Luke thought to himself that by neglecting Ella and even forbidding her from showing up again, he'd already given Jane enough consideration.
After all, Jane was just a kept pet to him. Neglecting the girlfriend who once saved his life, all for the sake of a pet—that in itself was an extraordinary kind of indulgence.
Suddenly, Luke leaned down and nipped at Jane's earlobe, making her tremble involuntarily.
As she instinctively tried to pull away, his large hand cupped the back of her head, holding her firmly in place.
Refusing to let her retreat, he effortlessly lifted her up and set her on the foyer cabinet behind them.
She was trapped in that small, confined space as he gripped her chin, pinned her against the wall, and claimed her lips with bruising intensity.
Jane whimpered softly, her breath stolen by his relentless kisses, a faint sob slipping from her lips.
Only then did Luke's eyes darken, his gaze growing even more intense.
In one swift motion, he scooped up the flushed woman, her eyes glazed with desire, her body soft and pliant in his arms, and carried her upstairs.
They had a sweet and passionate night.
The next morning, Luke left early for work. Jane woke up as usual, had breakfast, and got ready to head back to work.
Just as Jane was about to leave the house, her phone suddenly rang, the shrill sound cutting through the quiet.
For some reason, the moment she heard the ringtone, her heart began to race. A bad feeling crept up from deep within her. Her fingertips trembled slightly for no reason as she answered the call. "Hello?"
"Ms. Ritter, this is Wendy. Please come to the hospital immediately. Your mother is in critical condition and is being rushed to the ICU. I'm afraid if you don't hurry, it might be too late," said Wendy in panic.
Jane staggered, her knee slamming into the doorframe. She nearly lost her balance.
Ignoring the sharp pain shooting through her leg, she frantically hailed a cab and rushed to the hospital.
During the ride, her hands trembled uncontrollably, her lips quivering with panic.
'H-How could this happen?' Jane kept thinking, her mind reeling. 'Just yesterday, when Luke and I went to see Mom, she was perfectly fine. We had even finalized the surgery arrangements.
'How could everything change so drastically in just one day? Why is she suddenly in critical condition?'
With no time to question why, Jane raced to the hospital. As soon as Jane arrived outside the operating room, she ran into Wendy, who had called her with the urgent news.
"Wendy, what happened to my mom? Her condition was stable. How could this happen? How could she take such a sudden turn for the worse and end up in the ICU?" Jane asked.
"Ms. Ritter, that's not the case. Your mother's condition hasn't worsened," Wendy said urgently. "She attempted suicide by cutting her wrists. This morning, we found her in the bathroom of the VIP ward."
