"What? Suicide?" Jane stammered, her voice trembling. She staggered unsteadily, shaking her head in denial as she backed away until her back hit the door.
"No, impossible. How could Mom possibly kill herself? She was perfectly fine, just waiting for her surgery. Yesterday, she even said she wanted to come to my wedding after she recovered.
"She kept saying she wanted to hold her grandchild. How could she?" Jane stammered, her voice trembling with disbelief. Tears streamed helplessly down Jane's face.
Jane couldn't believe it. No, she refused to believe that her mother had taken her own life.
Jane thought to herself, 'Mom has been so looking forward to my wedding, to me settling down, to seeing me happy. I haven't even found happiness yet. Why did Mom have to—'
Wendy couldn't bear to see Jane crying her eyes out. She spoke softly to comfort Jane. "Ms. Ritter, we still don't know why your mother attempted suicide. I was actually the first to find her this morning.
"She was lying in the bathroom with a razor blade in her hand. It seems she slit her wrists.
"But right now, the most important thing is your mother's condition, not the reason. She's been in emergency surgery for over an hour, so we should be getting some news soon."
"That's right. Emergency treatment. Yes, Mom's still alive. They can still save her," Jane cried out, her voice trembling with desperate hope.
Wendy's words suddenly jolted Jane back to reality. Jane hastily wiped away her tears and clutched Wendy's hand with desperate strength.
"Wendy, please tell the doctors they must save my mom at all costs. Money is no object—just save her," Jane sobbed.
"Don't worry. We'll do our best," Wendy promised.
Minute after agonizing minute passed, yet the OR light remained stubbornly lit.
Jane waited anxiously outside the OR, her eyes fixed on the still-lit Operating sign, having no idea how much longer the surgery would take.
Jane's heart wrenched with unbearable pain, and panicked tears streamed uncontrollably down her cheeks.
For the first time in her life, Jane truly understood what it meant when every second felt like an eternity—lost, helpless, and completely adrift.
At that moment, Jane suddenly thought of Luke. Jane wanted to call Luke. She was about to break down.
Jane was terrified that the OR doors might swing open at any moment, and someone would tell her, "Your mom didn't make it," the thought sending her into a panic.
Suddenly, the door to the operating room swung open before Jane's eyes, and Wendy rushed out with a panicked expression.
"Wendy," Jane cried out anxiously. "How's my mom doing?"
"Your mother has suffered severe blood loss and urgently needs an immediate transfusion," Wendy said. "Do you have any family or friends whose blood type matches hers?"
"Me—" Jane hesitated for a split second, instinctively wanting to volunteer herself before remembering her blood type didn't match Rose's.
Jane shook her head weakly, her voice barely above a whisper. "No, we don't. We don't have any other relatives or friends."
Wendy continued, "Then we'll have to get blood from the nearest hospital. It's just bad luck—they're low on blood here today. Don't worry. I've already called the nearest one."
"But with road construction outside, traffic is worse than usual. I'm afraid even if the blood arrives, it won't make it in time. Unless—"
"Unless what?" Jane cried out, her voice cracking with desperation.
Wendy said urgently, "Unless someone can get a helicopter here. Both our hospitals have helipads on the roof, exactly for emergencies like this. If we can airlift the blood bags, there's still a chance."
'Helicopter?' she wondered. Jane's mind repeated, desperately latching onto the word. 'In all of Jovinia, there's only one person I can think of—someone so powerful and influential they could arrange a helicopter on such short notice—Luke.'
Without a moment's hesitation, Jane fumbled for her phone and dialed Luke's number, the one she had never dared to call before. She didn't even have time to think; all she could do was hope he'd pick up.
An agonizingly slow dial tone pulsed through the phone receiver, each beep stretching Jane's nerves a little thinner.
Each ring seemed to stretch on forever, each one wrenching at Jane's heart with unbearable tension.
'Luke will pick up the phone, right?' Jane told herself anxiously, clutching her phone with trembling fingers.
Jane clutched her phone, silently begging, 'Please, Luke, pick up. Just answer.'
Jane had no idea how much time had passed—long enough for her to fear the call would never be answered.
Suddenly, the familiar deep timbre of the man's voice came through the receiver—that rich baritone she knew so well.
"Hello?" he said.
"Hello? Luke, it's Jane," Jane stammered. Her voice trembled with panic and desperation, her words tumbling out in an incoherent rush.
Luke paused briefly on the other end, clearly not expecting Jane to call him at this moment. It seemed she had never taken the initiative to call him before.
"I'm in the middle of something." Luke's icy tone held a subtle aloofness. "Whatever it is, it can wait."
"No, wait. Luke, please don't hang up. This is a life-or-death emergency," Jane cried out.
