Jane's heart skipped. She hadn't expected Dwight to be so sharp. She smiled sweetly, "Of course, it's real, Grandpa. Luke and I got our papers at City Hall. You can check anytime."
"Really?" Dwight looked doubtful, his sharp, cloudy eyes staring at her.
Jane smiled even sweeter, "Yeah, it's true."
After Jane confirmed it, Dwight nodded, looking relieved. "It's good. You're willing to marry Luke; that's great. Jane, from the moment I saw you, I knew you were the one.
"Over the past year, I have seen what kind of girl you are. That's why I pushed Luke to marry you. Don't be fooled by his fancy title. He may seem impressive, but he's got no one really close to him."
"The Drakes are like wolves. He's all alone. I'm afraid when I'm gone, no one will really care for him..."
"Grandpa, don't say that."
"You have to promise me." Dwight suddenly grabbed Jane's hand. His hands shook a little, but his grip was firm. "Jane, promise me. Whatever happens, take care of Luke for me. Don't give up on him."
Jane went quiet. She didn't get why Dwight said that.
"Promise me!" Dwight's eyes went red, staring at Jane.
After a pause, Jane nodded. "Okay, I promise you." She would take care of Luke during her contract. It was to repay Dwight for helping her this past year.
After leaving Dwight's suite, Jane didn't see Luke. She figured he'd already left. She didn't care and hurried off to work.
But as she walked out of the nursing home, she bumped into Ella at the entrance, stepping out of a car in high heels. She was wondering what Ella was doing there.
Without thinking, Jane rushed over and grabbed Ella's wrist. "Ella, give me back my ring!"
She smelled strong perfume on Ella. It was her perfume, named "Larmes Sacrées Éternelles". Ella had put on way too much, making the sweet, mysterious tuberose smell nasty and harsh.
Jane said, "And give my perfume back, too!"
Ella spun around, her expression shifting quickly. "Jane, it's you again? Why are you popping up everywhere?" She shouted, and a flicker of guilt crossed her eyes.
Ella was so glad she'd left the ring at home to be safe. Otherwise, that huge payout she was expecting could've been blown by Jane.
"Give me the ring and perfume, and I'll leave you be. Or else..." Jane squeezed tighter.
All that hard work had made Jane tougher than Ella, a spoiled rich girl. Jane squeezed even harder, making Ella's face scrunch up in pain.
"Ouch. That hurts. Let go! The perfume—I spilled it; it's gone. And the ring... I don't have it. I really didn't bring it today."
"That was my mom's favorite perfume, and you wrecked it!" Jane spotted Ella's bare neck and got even madder, squeezing harder.
"Ah, that hurts. Go easy," Ella, sweating from the pain, pleaded. "I'm sorry, I admit it. Let me go and I'll give back the ring, alright? I swear!"
Jane let go. "Alright, where is my ring?"
Ella rubbed her red wrist. "I told you; I didn't bring it."
"You're lying to me..."
Seeing Jane about to lose it, Ella's eyes lit up. "Hey, hold on," she said fast, "I'll give it back, but... you gotta pay me. Give me 60 thousand dollars, and it's yours."
"60 thousand? Mug me, huh? That ring's mine. Why should I pay for it?" Jane had never met anyone so shameless.
"I... I can't help it," Ella said, eyes red, looking even more pathetic.
"I'm not kidding. It's a guy's ring; I can't wear it. I was gonna pawn it anyway. My mom checked at the pawnshop yesterday, and they said it's worth 60 thousand. My mom definitely won't give you the ring for nothing."
Jane bit her lip, staying quiet. She knew Ella had a point. Ella's mother, Lily, hated Jane. If the pawnshop said the ring was worth 60 thousand, Lily wouldn't give it back for free.
As Jane hesitated, Ella looked her over. Jane's designer clothes made her look soft and glowing, kind of like the rich girl she used to be.
Even if it was a fake designer, Ella felt jealous. She wanted to get money from Jane to make her suffer.
"Look, for old times' sake, I'll give you two more days. If you can come up with 60 thousand by then, I'll give back the ring. Otherwise, once it's pawned, more money couldn't get it back."
After Ella finished, she jumped in her car and took off. It was a bummer she couldn't meet that important person today as planned. But now she had to dodge Jane. She couldn't let Jane find out someone was after Ella because of that ring.
Jane didn't care where Ella went. She stood by the road, head down, thinking about the money.
That ring was tied to the guy who had slept with her that night. It was her only lead. Even though she'd given up on that guy, a strong feeling told her the ring was super important and she had to get it back.
But 60 thousand dollars was not a walk in the park for her.
Just then, a familiar guy's voice came from behind. "Ms. Ritter."
