Before Jane could finish, Luke knocked the hot congee out of her hands. The ceramic bowl smashed on the stairs, spilling congee everywhere.
Jane turned pale with fright. Before she could react, Luke's voice, a bit angry, came from above. "Next time, leave on your own!"
Luke's disgust made Jane fully wake up and shiver. Without a word, she squatted to pick up the broken porcelain on the steps.
Her pale fingers felt numb, just like last night. Even as she picked up the hot pieces, with her fingers soaked in congee, she felt no pain.
Luke stood on the stairs, watching Jane's pale fingers brush over the hot mess. His fierce brows got tighter.
After Jane picked up all the pieces and stood up, she saw that Luke was gone. 'Ha... of course, he's gone,' she thought. 'Would I expect him to help or comfort me?'
Right then, she saw everything through. She'd been overthinking; Luke's help made her think he didn't hate her. She was so dumb.
Jane quickly cleaned the stairs. Back in her room, she flipped through her bankbook and contacts. She didn't know what she could do to get 60 thousand dollars in two days.
Jane woke up in the middle of the night. Her mind was on the 60 thousand dollars, so she couldn't sleep. She got up to get some water.
The first floor was dark. Only a faint light from upstairs shone down the stairs. It seemed that Luke was awake. But it wasn't her business.
Jane told herself to ignore the light upstairs. Focusing, she stumbled in the dark to the sink and poured a glass of water. After drinking it, she felt better and started back to her room.
Suddenly, a loud thud came from upstairs.
Jane froze. Instinctively, she wanted to look up. But a voice inside told her not to interfere. Luke's cold, threatening words echoed in her ears. Upstairs was his private space, off-limits. She didn't want to push her luck.
Jane forced herself to ignore it and felt her way back to her room. But just as she reached the door, two even louder crashes came from upstairs. It was like glass breaking.
Jane thought, 'What on earth is he doing up there!?' She knew she shouldn't get involved, but after a long silence, those loud noises made her nervous.
Finally, she gave up resisting. She clenched her teeth, took the plunge, and went up to the second floor. The second floor was larger than the first. Light was seeping out from under a door that wasn't fully closed. That was Luke's room.
"Mr. Drake... are you there?" she whispered. "What's going on?" She called out softly a few times, but got no response from the bedroom. Jane bit her lip, took a deep breath, and pushed open the door that wasn't completely shut.
When she opened the door, she was shocked. She never expected this—Luke passed out near the bed.
Luke's eyebrows were furrowed in pain, his face pale. One of his hands was clenched against his chest, the other gripped the headboard tightly.
A phone and broken glass were scattered on the floor by the bed. Clearly, the noise Jane heard downstairs earlier was the phone and glass falling and shattering.
The man who had been cold and intimidating now looked really weak. His eyes were shut tight, his brows furrowed. Even his sharp features were twisted in pain. Sweat covered his forehead, showing how much he was hurting.
Jane thought, 'Serves him right.' All that food he wasted, he deserved this.
But then, her nursing instincts kicked in. Luke had helped her before, even if his words were harsh. So she thought she'd return the favor for his random help at the restaurant. That way, she didn't owe him anything.
Jane stepped forward to help Luke up. "Luke... how are you? Are you okay? Can you hear me?" she asked softly. When her hand touched his shoulder, she felt heat.
Luke looked like he was in agony, shivering slightly. He didn't respond, his eyes shut tight, sweat pouring down his forehead, his face pale and tense.
Jane worked as a nursing aide and had extensive experience in dealing with various medical situations. She had a nursing certificate. She quickly figured out Luke's issue. It must be a gastric ulcer attack.
Jane frowned, complaining, "Skipping dinner with an upset stomach? That's something. Luckily, no blood means no need to rush to the ER."
Jane helped Luke into bed and made him comfortable. Then she went downstairs to look for medicine. Surprisingly, such a big apartment didn't have any. Luckily, there was a 24-hour drugstore downstairs.
Jane went to the drugstore, got the medicine, and hurried back. She gave Luke the ulcer medicine. Then, she cleaned up the broken glass and spilled water. Finally, she put his phone back on the nightstand.
Normally, Jane would cook something for him to soothe his stomach. Pills only offer temporary relief, not a permanent fix.
But what she did tonight was push it. To stay safe, she shouldn't get involved any further.
Seeing Luke's frown relax, Jane knew the medicine was working. "Even if you said helping me was no big deal, not worth mentioning, I still thank you for it.
"Alright, I've paid you back. Now, take care of yourself. Next time, you might not get off so easily. Okay, I'm leaving. Get some rest."
Jane glanced at Luke, eyes closed, and whispered gently. She grabbed the cup and pill box, turned off the light, and slipped out quietly.
After Jane left, Luke's fingers moved in the dark.
