The next day, Jane woke up feeling groggy. She'd stayed up helping Luke until midnight, so she didn't sleep well. She was fifteen minutes late. She felt relieved when she knew Luke must still be working out upstairs.
Jane rushed to freshen up. To her shock, as she left the room, she saw Luke at the table. She ducked her head, long eyelashes hiding her fear.
'Why is he down so early? Did he know I was upstairs last night?' Jane wondered, feeling anxious. Then she walked into the dining room.
Luke was nearly 6'3", tall and intimidating even sitting down. His fancy suit made him look cold and distant. Hearing footsteps, Luke looked up. Seeing Jane, his sharp brows furrowed, his gaze darkening.
"Morning, Mr. Drake," Jane said quietly, hurrying to the kitchen. "I didn't expect you down so early. I'll make breakfast now."
Seeing the black coffee by Luke's hand, Jane frowned. He had a bad stomach but drank it anyway. As a nurse, she almost scolded him—her instincts took over.
Luke glared, his voice icy. "Live here, follow my rules. Jane, I don't wait for latecomers. Don't let this happen again."
Jane wouldn't have overslept if she hadn't stayed up all night caring for him. "I understand," she murmured, not explaining.
Jane quickly made breakfast, served it, and ate her own portion, head down.
But Luke just picked at the fancy salad and toast from the fridge, bought by the maid. He ignored Jane's cooking.
Luke kept his head down, staring at the financial report on his phone, with coffee nearby. When he finished, he stood up. Jane quickly dropped her fork and walked him out.
Jane didn't get why Luke made her eat with him and cook breakfast and dinner. He never ate her food. They sat in silence, not like a real couple. Since they weren't really married, it would be better to eat together less.
As Luke was changing his shoes at the door, about to leave, he suddenly turned, cold eyes fixed on her. "By the way, don't go to Grandpa's without me."
Jane paused. "But Dwight said he wants me to visit when I'm free. I even promised to go this weekend—"
Mid-sentence, she saw Luke's eyes harden. He bent down and grabbed her chin. Her cheeks ached as his strong hands squeezed.
"Jane, I'm not discussing this." Luke's eyes filled with disgust. "Don't try to get anything from Grandpa. Don't think you can trick him just because he's old."
Yesterday at the nursing home, it was the first time Luke saw Dwight—their famously strict elder—smile like that. Luke had thought Dwight just didn't want him to marry the woman arranged by the Drakes.
But after seeing how Dwight treated Jane yesterday, Luke realized Dwight really liked her. Dwight's attitude was way off.
"I... didn't..." Jane's voice was raspy, her throat hurt so bad she could barely talk, and tears filled her eyes. Her sad, tear-stained face was so pitiful.
'Look at her, acting like a victim!' Luke sneered in his heart. Then he said coldly. "It's better if it never happened." He let go of Jane roughly, and then grabbed a tissue and wiped his fingers carefully, like touching her was dirty.
Scared by Luke's scary look, Jane's legs gave way. When he let go, she fell to the floor. His clear, bruised finger marks were left on her sad face.
Luke didn't even glance at Jane on the floor. He tossed the tissue, grabbed his briefcase, and walked out.
Suddenly, Luke stopped at the door. "By the way..." his voice went icy and deep. "Did you go upstairs last night?"
