Jane froze, her blood turning cold. Her mind went blank for two seconds before she replied, "No. I cleaned the kitchen and went to bed. Why? Was something up there?"
Luke didn't answer for ages. Jane kept her head down, scared to look up. Her cheeks had gone numb from the pain, and she felt dizzy.
Then, Luke's low, icy voice came from above. "No. Stay off the second floor. Remember that. Catch you sneaking up, you're out."
The door slammed shut with a bang. Luke was really gone. Jane gasped, collapsing. Her heart almost jumped out. Thank god she didn't blow her cover.
Just then, Ella called. "Hey Jane, how's the 60 thousand dollars coming? My mom's already set up a pawn shop appointment. If you don't have the cash by six PM, the ring's gone."
Jane said, "I'm still trying to get the money. Sixty grand is way too much. Ella, could you talk to your mom—"
"No way! Why should I help you? You really think you're still my spoiled cousin? Listen! Sixty grand, not a penny less. After six PM, my mom takes that ring to the pawn shop. Take it or leave it." Then Ella hung up with a slam.
Jane's temples were pounding. She really wanted to forget about the ring, but a voice inside told her she had to get it back.
She couldn't bother Josie and Warren again. After thinking it over, she made up her mind to try borrowing from people she knew first.
A man shouted at Jane crudely, "Bug off! Get outta here. We told you, our boss is outta the country. Need a loan? Go somewhere else. We ain't a charity."
Jane couldn't even count how many times she'd been kicked out of companies today. The man's rough shove made her stumble, and she slipped on the stairs. She fell hard, smacking her forehead on the railing. Everything went black as blood gushed from her temple.
"Not my fault! You slipped." The scared man took off running.
Jane twisted her ankle in the fall and lay there, dazed. When the dizziness faded, she gritted her teeth and pulled herself up using the railing.
"Crap, it's almost six!" She was short on cash. Just then, her phone buzzed with a bank alert. Her account now had 60 thousand dollars in it.
Jane widened her eyes. "What's this? Who'd send me 60 thousand?"
Right then, her phone rang. Dwight's voice came through the end of the line. "Hey Jane, did the 60 thousand transfer go through?"
"Dwight... Grandpa, you sent me that money?" Jane clutched her phone, shocked.
"Yeah, why didn't you tell me you needed money? If Daniel hadn't heard people talking about your cash troubles, I wouldn't have known my granddaughter-in-law was borrowing from strangers."
"No... Grandpa. I'm not borrowing. Just... talking to investors." Jane panicked and blurted out a quick excuse. She couldn't let Dwight catch on.
Dwight chuckled and said, "Why bother strangers? You want to start your own business? Well, you ought to come to me first. Sweetheart, whatever venture you're diving into, just take that money as a little boost from your loving grandpa."
"Grandpa, I can't take your money. I'm sending it back right now."
"Alright, if you don't want my money, then I'll call Luke right now and ask how he's been taking care of his wife!
"Luke didn't even give you a black card, making you borrow cash from strangers? That really ticks me off. I gotta give him a piece of my mind."
Dwight's words made Jane's heart skip a beat. This must never get to Luke. The icy glare Luke gave Jane before leaving was stuck in her head. It hurt her all the time. She couldn't be looked down on by Luke.
Jane gave away. "No... Grandpa, don't call Luke. I... I'll take it. Please don't bother him at work."
In the end, Jane took Dwight's money. But she insisted it was a loan and would pay it back in installments once she got her paycheck.
Dwight gave in and promised not to tell Luke about it.
Meanwhile, over at the nursing home, right after the call ended, Dwight's smile was gone. He called out his most trusted guy. "Daniel, when you saw Jane today, was she really begging, not just talking business?"
Dwight had lied to Jane. Daniel had seen Jane get kicked out of a company today. But to spare her embarrassment, Dwight didn't bring it up during their call.
Daniel replied, "Yeah, I saw Mrs. Drake get thrown out of that construction company myself. I talked to the manager; he said she was asking for a loan."
