"Humph!" Dwight punched his bed angrily. "I knew Luke was lying to me. He married Jane, but she can't even come up with 60 thousand. That's not how I wanted him to take care of her."
"Mr. Drake's not that bad," Daniel said, hesitating.
Dwight scoffed, "Maybe not. He's tough on outsiders; he might even try to trick me. But Jane, I'll take good care of her no matter what."
Dwight came up with an idea. "I think they faked the marriage to trick me. I'll move into their house. I will make sure they sleep in the same bed like a real married couple. Then I'll feel better."
Then Dwight waved Daniel over and told him what to do in detail.
Jane rushed to the Judd residence with cash in hand, ignoring the pain.
Ella wanted cash. So Jane dragged her injured leg, rushed to the bank, and barely got the money before closing.
Outside the garden, Jane met Ella, who was waiting.
Ella saw Jane limping, with blood on her forehead. She sneered and raised an eyebrow. "Humph, right on time—5:50. Ten minutes later, and you'd lose your stuff."
Jane clenched her fists, staying calm. "Stop talking. Where's the ring?"
"Here," Ella said, pulling the ring from her jacket. The black band, as wide as a finger, was covered in shiny diamonds. Clearly, it was a man's ring.
Jane reached for it, but Ella stepped back. "Wait. Show me the money. I won't give it without money."
Jane took a deep breath and unzipped the bag. "Here's the cash. Cash for the goods."
Ella didn't trust Jane, and Jane trusted Ella even less. She wouldn't pay until the deal was done.
Ella knew exactly what Jane was thinking, and she wasn't bothered. She just smiled, walked up, and counted the money in Jane's bag. Twenty stacks of brand-new cash—sixty thousand dollars in total—looked like it just came from the bank.
Ella even had a counterfeit detector pen. After checking that all the money was real and there were no hidden papers, she finally gave a sneering smile.
"Not bad, Jane. 60 thousand in just two days? Must've been from selling yourself, huh? Look at you. How many guys have you been with? The Ritter family heiress, brought down by men. Colin would be grossed out if he saw his ex like this."
"Stop talking. Give me the ring, and the sixty thousand is yours." Jane knew Ella was trying to provoke her. But she was dizzy and weak, almost passing out, too tired to argue. She just wanted her stuff back before she fainted.
Ella saw that Jane wasn't buying it and frowned, annoyed by her blank face. Then, she remembered something and handed over the ring. "Here you go. Pay up."
They traded cash for the ring. As soon as Jane got it, she felt a huge relief. She put it on the chain around her neck. This time, she wouldn't lose it again.
Ella got the money, feeling proud. She looked up and saw Jane being so careful, she couldn't help but sneer. She thought, 'Hah, what a fool. The big shot had already sent someone to the Judd family, and I know who the ring really belonged to.
'Too bad, even if Jane took the ring now, so what? With her background, she'd never meet Luke. And she'd never know that the guy she hooked up with at the club that night was Luke.'
After getting the ring back, Jane limped to her apartment. She had scrapes on her forehead and a swollen ankle, but she felt much better.
Jane made her plan. For the next year, besides taking care of her mom, she'd save every penny. She had to pay Dwight back the 60 thousand dollars as soon as she could.
As soon as she opened the apartment door, she felt a cold vibe. Her hand froze on the doorknob. Her eyes shot up and met a dark, threatening look. It was Luke.
