Jane was completely shocked that Luke actually came back at this moment. Her face drained of color.
As she met Luke's piercing, cold eyes, her body shuddered, and her temples began to throb. She felt a vague sense of unease, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it.
"Back already?" Luke's voice was unusually soft, deep, and resonant, but it didn't reveal anything.
Jane nodded nervously. "Uh... I forgot to pick up groceries. I'll head down to the store—"
Before she could turn around, two tattered black plastic bags hit the floor. Women's clothes and everyday items spilled out, scattering everywhere.
Jane's heart raced. Those bags were hers—everything that had spilled out was from her room. "Mr. Drake, what are you doing?"
"Jane, did I ever tell you what happens if you break my rules? You're out. Sixty thousand dollars? You're quite the schemer. No wonder you didn't want my grandpa's money—twenty-four thousand wasn't enough for you, was it?"
Jane realized what Luke was implying. He thought she had manipulated Dwight into giving her money. She tried to explain, "No, I-I didn't mean that, Mr. Drake. And Dwight said—"
"I won't buy any of your stories," Luke cut her off coldly. He lounged on the sofa, legs crossed, exuding an air of gloom. His look at her was as if he were staring at something filthy and despicable.
"Jane, you broke the rules the moment you tried to take advantage of my grandfather. The deal is off. If 300 thousand dollars wasn't enough for you, then you get nothing.
"I want all my money—360 thousand—back in my account by tomorrow evening. Now, get out," Luke said and pointed to the door, his patience worn thin. Clearly, he had made up his mind.
She tried to explain, "No, it's not like that, Mr. Drake. I didn't hurt Dwight. Really."
She just stood rooted to the spot, stunned and disoriented. She thought helplessly, 'Luke wants the money back, and he's canceling the deal. No, how can I get so much money?
'And Mom's still waiting for surgery. I need the money. 360 thousand? I can't even scrape together a fraction of it.'
Finally, Jane seemed to understand. She pleaded, "Mr. Drake, I know I was wrong. I truly do. I shouldn't have done anything to upset you! I promise I'll behave and listen to you from now on. Please, don't send me away. I can't lose that money. Please..."
She stumbled, her panic and desperation overwhelming her as she fell to her knees at Luke's feet. Ignoring the sharp pain in her ankle, she clung to his sleeve, begging for his forgiveness.
Her tear-streaked face looked frail and pitiful. Her tearful eyes seemed to say it all, and with the cut on her forehead, she looked heartbreakingly vulnerable, the kind of sight that made anyone want to pull her into a tight hug.
Luke's eyes darkened with a mix of emotions. For a moment, as he saw the blood on Jane's forehead, his expression softened.
But then he scowled fiercely and thought, 'This greedy, deceitful woman—she almost makes me want to forgive her and keep her around. But no, going after Grandpa is a line she should never have crossed.'
Luke pressed his lips into a cold, thin line, ready to cast Jane out of his sight for good.
Suddenly, as Jane struggled, a necklace with a black ring pendant fell out. The ring looked familiar. Its black stone body was covered with glittering diamonds.
Luke was about to push Jane away, but his heart skipped. 'This ring is mine. I've left it to that woman that night. Why's it with Jane now? Could she be—'
All at once, Luke's blood boiled. He yanked Jane into his arms, tugged at her necklace, and demanded, "Where did you get this ring?"
