"I—" Jane hesitated. She wasn't used to Luke holding her this close. His cool scent reached her, and her heart raced. That night at the club flashed through her mind. She quickly ducked his gaze, afraid of his burning eyes.
"Wh-what ring? Where? I don't get it. This is mine!" Jane brushed off Luke's harsh tone, fumbling to fasten the ring back around her neck.
She was avoiding answering directly. That night at the Night Charm Club was a past she kept hidden.
As Jane's fingers lightly brushed against the obsidian ring, Luke swiftly snatched it away. His expression turned serious. "Jane, come on, tell me. Where did this ring come from? Look me in the eye and be honest."
Luke leaned in closer, his tall frame towering over her, cutting off any chance of escape. He demanded answers, his voice low and strained, barely containing the intensity of his emotions. His eyes were piercing, as if they could see right through her.
Jane couldn't meet his gaze. She looked down, her voice softening. "I told you, the ring is mine. Mr. Drake, please give it back. It means a lot to me."
"Is it yours?" Luke forced her to look at him, gripping her chin gently but firmly. "Just tell me how you got it. I want the truth."
Right then, Jane's heart skipped a beat, and she held her breath. Luke's eyes were intense and piercing. Under his gaze, she felt a little off-balance.
Somehow, his look made her defenses waver. She started to think that maybe she could tell him that she'd agreed to a blind date to help pay for her mom's medical bills.
Things had turned out completely different from what she expected, but she wasn't the one in the wrong. If he understood her situation, he might let her stay.
"I... Alright, I'll tell you about the ring," she said, taking a deep breath and deciding to take a chance.
She seemed distant, lost in thought. "Not long ago, I promised my uncle and aunt to meet someone. And during the date, things went wrong. That's when I got this ring."
As Jane finished speaking, Luke narrowed his eyes sharply.
He examined the inner band of the obsidian ring closely. It was supposed to have tiny engraved letters inside, usually hidden and only visible under good lighting. But now, with the light shining directly on it, there was nothing there. The ring was fake.
"Jane, are you saying this ring was given to you by the guy your aunt and uncle set you up with that night?" Luke glared at her with icy eyes, his voice cold, cutting through her words.
"Yes," Jane choked out, but then she stammered. "N-no, that's not exactly right..."
Johnson and Lily had set her up with Don, but the ring wasn't from him. It was actually from the guy who slept with her. But Jane couldn't say that. She only mumbled, "It was...um... it was that guy from that night, but—"
Luke scoffed, raising his eyebrows at her. A cold smile tugged at the corner of his lips, like he'd just heard the most ridiculous thing. He sneered inwardly, 'She's still lying, even now. I knew it. She's trying to stick around and pull some trick.
'I've been set up at the club, and she knows Don, its shareholder. And just as the Drake family wanted me to get married, Grandpa tried to set me up with her.
'Now, it seems like she's up to the same old tricks. She knows I'm looking for the one with this ring, so she got this fake one. She wants me to think she's that woman from that night.
'Jane's always so scheming, greedy, and hypocritical. It really makes me sick. But why? Why does she have a face that draws me in? How could someone so deceitful have such an appealing face?'
Luke's face darkened like a storm cloud. In the next second, he reached out and grabbed the thin necklace around Jane's neck. With a snap, the chain broke.
"Mr. Drake, what are you—" Jane was yanked onto the couch. Before she could even cry out, she saw Luke raise his right hand, holding the ring. His sharp, handsome face was as cold as ice, an expression she'd never seen before.
Suddenly, Jane realized what Luke was about to do. "No!" She tried to stop him, but it was too late.
