The obsidian ring shattered into pieces right before Jane's eyes.
"No, please stop... Why did you ruin my ring? Why?" Jane cried, collapsing to the floor.
The obsidian ring had broken in Luke's hand, scattering diamonds everywhere. With trembling hands, she picked up the broken pieces, not caring that the tiny shards cut her skin.
'I finally managed to get it back from Ella. It cost me 60 thousand dollars! Who gives Luke the right to just smash it like this?' she thought bitterly.
"Luke, why did you do this?" Jane held the broken ring, her fingers cut and bleeding. She glared back at him with red eyes. It was the first time she'd called him by his name since they met.
"Why?" Luke raised an eyebrow at her coldly. "Because you're always lying. Jane, before I lose all my patience, get out of here. Now. Or else, I might just change my mind and call the police."
"You—" Jane wanted to curse at Luke fiercely. But when she opened her mouth, nothing came out. She couldn't think of any words to say.
Jane's mind raced. 'How could he just break my ring like that, without any reason? Not even an apology, and now he's blaming me? He thinks I'm lying? Everything I told him was the truth.'
Jane's hands trembled with rage as she clenched her fists. "Luke, do you really think I want to be here? If the contract is over, then fine. I guess I was wrong about you. I shouldn't have trusted you with anything!"
Her earlier panic and desperate tears were now overshadowed by a surge of fury and deep sorrow. She regretted feeling sorry for him and saving him last night. She should have just let him bleed out from that stomach ulcer upstairs.
Luke's eyes flashed with a cold, faint smile. "Me? Who's really the greedy one here, Jane? You scammed money from my grandpa, and don't make me start with your stealing."
"W-When did I ever steal anything?" Jane asked, her face pale in an instant.
"You snuck into my room on the second floor last night and took some foreign cash, didn't you?" Luke said with a cold stare. "That money wasn't enough, so today you went to my grandpa to keep ripping him off.
"Jane, do you really think I'm foolish enough to keep someone like you—dishonest and full of lies—around?"
When Luke had woken up that morning, he'd noticed signs of disturbance in his room on the second floor. After checking, he found that some foreign cash was missing from the drawer. He knew exactly who had taken it.
Jane instantly understood what Luke was implying. He thought she was a thief—that she had gone into his room last night to steal money.
"No wonder... Ha!" she muttered, realizing why Luke believed she'd cheated Dwight. He had already made up his mind about her character. He saw her as a petty thief, a shameless woman.
Jane staggered back, her body swaying. But she didn't bother to explain. She took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes, and bit her lip hard to hold them back.
She endured the pain, picked up the scattered plastic bags, and began packing her things. Then she slowly made her way to the door. She wanted to leave this place forever.
Luke's eyes followed Jane as she stood there, her back thin and frail but resolute. He felt a flicker of irritation. He'd pushed her out, but seeing her stubborn yet vulnerable figure just made him more annoyed.
He frowned, trying to suppress his irritation. "I need my 360 thousand dollars in cash by tomorrow evening. If you don't give it back, I'm calling the police."
Jane was already at the door. Hearing Luke's words, she paused and wavered on her feet.
Luke's brows furrowed even deeper, his piercing gaze fixed on her.
After a moment, there was no plea for mercy. Instead, she spoke in a soft, weak but determined voice, "I understand, Mr. Drake. You can count on me. Even if it means selling everything I have, I'll pay back that money on time."
