Before Jane lost consciousness, she whispered Colin's name. Then everything went dark, and she fell hard. But instead of hitting the cold, unforgiving ground, she landed in a wide, firm embrace.
Luke gazed down at her, his intense eyes locked on Jane's pale, disheveled face. His handsome but sharp features were cold and detached. 'Colin? Was that the name she just called?'
"Mr. Drake, we've got everyone outside under control. Should we handle them ourselves, or should we call the police?" Hayden, the head assistant, stepped forward and asked, his face a mask of neutrality.
At that moment, the thugs at the alley entrance were already subdued, lying face down on the ground, with their men keeping watch.
Inside the alley, the guy who'd tried to hurt Jane was being taken down by a group of bodyguards in black suits. Everything was firmly under Luke's command.
Luke glanced down at Jane cradled in his arms. Her face was streaked with tears, her hair a mess, one cheek swollen from a blow, and there was blood on her forehead and the corner of her mouth. Her left foot was twisted at an awkward angle—clearly broken.
But in her disheveled state, she looked even more fragile, and Luke felt an instinctive urge to shield her.
"Call the police and let them deal with it," Luke said, his voice as cold and distant as ever. He frowned, gently lifted Jane, and carried her out of the alley.
"Hey, Mr. Drake," Hayden said cautiously, following behind. "I heard Ms. Ritter mention Colin before she passed out. Should we look into it?"
Hayden's brow twitched ever so slightly. He was pretty sure Jane meant Colin Drake, Luke's nephew. Given their complicated relationship, her calling out another man's name, especially Colin's, was potentially troublesome.
Luke's expression remained cool and unreadable. He ignored Hayden's question, tightened the black coat around Jane, and carefully placed her in the car. It was a quiet but clear gesture of possession.
Luxury cars screeched to a halt at the alley entrance, and men in black suits quickly spilled out to form a protective perimeter. The commotion instantly drew a curious crowd.
Inside the café across the street, Ella's eyes were glued to the scene, her expression tense. "How did all these cars get here so fast?"
Jasmine, completely unaware of the gravity of the situation, sat beside Ella, sipping her drink and eagerly anticipating the drama.
She said, "Ella, chill. Those cars were sent by my friend. He's a master at causing chaos—gathering everyone to take Jane down. Soon, a video of her messing around with a bunch of guys in the alley will be all over Twitter."
"Really? Are you sure your friend is reliable?" Ella asked skeptically.
"Absolutely. He's a notorious troublemaker who doesn't fear anyone. No one can save Jane now. Wait... What's happening? Ella, look! The woman he's holding—isn't that Jane?" Jasmine's shocked exclamation made Ella's head snap up.
At the street corner, bodyguards in black suits and holding umbrellas stepped forward, clearing a path through the crowd.
A tall, imposing man emerged, calm and composed in a tailored black suit. He cradled a petite woman wrapped in his coat, her face mostly hidden by a black umbrella. Only his clenched jaw was visible, radiating an air of barely contained fury.
Ella narrowed her eyes, staring at Jane in his arms. Jane shifted, her coat slipping and her hair falling away to reveal a delicate, pale face.
Across the street, Ella's eyes widened in disbelief—she recognized Jane. She thought in shock, 'How could the woman he's holding so protectively be Jane?'
