Jane jolted awake with a start, her heart pounding in her chest. "No!" she gasped, her eyes flying open. She was gasping for breath, her heart racing from the memory of the alley attack in her nightmare.
After a moment, her heartbeat began to slow. She remembered being rescued. She was lying on a large bed, the room eerily quiet except for the soft drip of an IV into her left hand.
'Just a nightmare,' she thought, feeling a wave of relief. But then she noticed something unsettling. The black sheets, the dark wallpaper, the gloomy furnishings—this wasn't just any room. It was Luke's bedroom. But he had kicked her out.
Jane tried to sit up, but winced and fell back onto the bed. Her body ached, her head throbbed, and she felt dizzy and weak. She couldn't even muster the strength to get up.
"Jane, you're already trying to get up?" A low, raspy voice suddenly came from the corner of the room.
Jane froze, her hand jerking back. Her weak body almost recoiled under the covers. She took a deep breath and looked toward the voice, her vision slightly blurry.
In the dim room, a faint red glow flickered. Luke was there, slouched on the couch in the shadows, his legs crossed as he idly flicked a lighter. The red glow came from the flame.
"Luke? What are you doing here?" Jane asked, biting her lip nervously. She didn't call him "Mr. Drake" this time—instead, she blurted out his first name almost instinctively.
Luke raised an eyebrow, his face expressionless. "This is my room. Were you expecting someone else?"
"Of course it's—" Jane's heart skipped a beat. She almost mentioned Colin's name, but the words died in her throat.
She didn't have any deep feelings for Colin; he was just an ex who had betrayed her. But she was just confused since she thought Colin had saved her before she passed out.
"No, I wasn't expecting anyone," Jane said, pausing for a moment. "Anyway, our partnership is over. What I think or who I want to see is none of your—"
Her words almost stuck in her throat. Luke's cold eyes pierced hers, sending a chill down her spine. She saw a flicker of threat in his gaze and quickly stopped talking.
She didn't need to finish; her message was clear: there was no partnership left between Jane and Luke. He couldn't control her or question her anymore. Her life was no longer his concern.
"Who says it's none of my business?" Luke's low, rough voice cut through the silence.
"What do you mean?" Jane gasped, looking up to see Luke standing close.
His large frame loomed over her, pinning her weak body back against the bed. He braced his arms on either side of her, his sharp face just inches from hers.
Luke stared down at her intently. "What if I tell you that everything about you belongs to me now? You're still my wife."
Jane's eyes widened in surprise, and she blinked rapidly, her gaze filled with confusion. Her cheeks flushed. 'Wh-what is he saying?' she thought. 'I don't get it.'
