"Didn't you tell me to leave?" Jane's voice wavered, her face a mix of anger and embarrassment. "Luke, you threatened to call the police and make me pay back the money. You kicked me out.
"And now you want me back? What do you take me for? A few nice words won't make me come crawling back as your wife."
Luke's closeness made her skin tingle, and she instinctively wanted to step back, to put some distance between them.
'Luke's being so unreasonable! I still remember how he broke my ring for no reason and ended our contract. And now, what gives him the right to stand this close, talking to me in that intense, serious tone?' she thought angrily.
"Don't flatter yourself," he said coldly, raising an eyebrow at her shocked expression. "I don't mean anything more than that."
He continued, his voice rough, his eyes unreadable, "Our deal isn't over. You don't need to pay back the 360 thousand. Just stay as Mrs. Drake. Well, Jane? You got what you wanted. Your plan worked again."
"Plan?" Jane frowned, puzzled. She couldn't recall ever plotting against him. "Luke, what are you talking about? When did I ever scheme?"
"Minutes after you ran off, Dwight got very sick and was rushed to the ICU," Luke continued.
Jane's heart sank. She had spoken with Dwight earlier that day, and he had seemed strong and healthy. Alarmed, she asked, "What? Dwight? How could this happen? Is he going to be okay?"
"He survived," Luke said harshly. "But the doctors said he needs strict bed rest. He can't be stressed. Jane, just quietly act as a good granddaughter-in-law while he recovers. Don't cause him any more trouble."
Jane gasped. 'What does he mean by me causing trouble for Dwight? It has always been Luke who's at odds with him. When I was Dwight's caregiver, I heard him repeatedly complain that his own grandson is always opposing him.'
"Drop the innocent act," Luke said, pinching her cheek with a knowing smirk. "If you hadn't rushed over to Grandpa for that 60 thousand dollars, he wouldn't be so stressed out, thinking there's something between us.
"The doctor said his sudden illness was mostly due to stress. Even in the ICU, he sent his man to keep an eye on us.
"His assistant, Daniel, has moved into the apartment. He'll be watching us closely from now on. Don't slip up in front of him. To keep Grandpa from getting worse, I've already moved your things up here. Starting tonight, you'll be sleeping here with me."
