"Wait, you and me... sharing a bed?" Jane's face turned bright red, and she almost bit her tongue. The thought of sharing a bed with Luke was unimaginable. "No way, I can't do that."
Jane immediately shot down the idea. She remembered how he had belittled her and how he had smashed her precious ring without a second thought. She had barely escaped his control once; she wasn't about to fall back into it.
She pushed Luke back forcefully. "Our relationship is over. If you need someone to pretend to be Mrs. Drake, find someone else. I'm not playing these games."
But as she tried to get up, a strong hand grabbed her waist and pulled her back. Luke pinned her down onto the bed. Before she could react, she was trapped in his arms.
He looked into her frightened eyes, his voice cold and unyielding. "Jane, it seems you haven't realized that you don't get to end this charade."
"What right do you have—" she started, but Luke cut her off, gripping her chin with his fingers. His eyes sharpened, and his rough thumb traced her chin.
Jane's body trembled uncontrollably. This was too close, too intense. Luke felt both dangerous and unfamiliar to her now.
The scent of smoky pine filled her senses as Luke's lips gently brushed away a tear from the corner of her eye. "Just be a good girl. Don't make this harder than it has to be."
Jane stayed silent, blinking back the strange mix of emotions. Her face was flushed, but she was determined. She had to find a way out of this.
Since she didn't give in, Luke's fingers lightly brushed over the bandage on Jane's forehead, then traced down her cold cheek, finally resting on her trembling lips.
His cold eyes bore down on her. "You wouldn't want your mom's hard-earned surgery to be canceled at the last minute, would you? Or worse, for her to be left heartbroken outside the hospital if you get arrested for fraud?"
Jane felt a chill run through her. His calm, icy tone cut deeper than any threat. She stared at him in disbelief, her breath catching. 'How could he be so ruthless?' she thought, horrified.
"Did you investigate me?" she gasped, realizing that Luke seemed to know about her mother's surgery and her past. She was sure he hadn't known before.
"Checking up on my trophy is just common sense," Luke replied, his voice flat and emotionless. "While you were unconscious, I had your background looked into. Your mom's sick and needs money, so I'll let bygones be bygones.
"Play the role of Mrs. Drake properly, keep Grandpa happy, and you'll keep the money. I'll also arrange top doctors for your mom's surgery. Otherwise, it's jail for you, and your mom ends up homeless. No hospital in town will touch her, I promise."
