"No, Luke, you can't—" Jane's voice was hoarse, her eyes turning red. She knew Luke could. His casual tone made it clear: he had the power to destroy everything. She felt even more uneasy than when she was called his "trophy".
"No. You know I can," Luke said, towering over her. He held her chin, his gaze cold as he watched the fear in her eyes. The intimacy from earlier was gone, replaced by a chilling calculation.
Luke Drake wasn't a kind man. If he needed to keep Jane by his side, he would use every means at his disposal. He would break her pride and crush her defiance, turning her into the obedient Mrs. Drake he wanted—no more tricks.
He lifted her trembling chin with his fingers, watching her composure crumble.
She closed her eyes, tears streaming down her face. She knew he was right. She had no choice. For her mother's sake, she had to agree.
"Fine. I'll be the best Mrs. Drake I can be. Luke... our deal stands," Jane said through her tears, her voice barely above a whisper. A tear fell down her cheek.
Luke's lips curved into a smile. He wiped away her tears with his thumb, cupping her face gently. He leaned in and kissed her. "Good. That's my girl."
Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door. "Mr. Drake?" Daniel, Dwight's trusted aide, pushed the door open. "Dwight just called from the hospital. He says it's urgent."
Luke was still holding Jane down on the bed, and from the doorway, it looked like they were in the middle of something pretty compromising. Daniel's eyes widened just a bit, but he quickly schooled his expression back to neutral.
Luke's eyes flashed, and he gave Jane a pointed look—a clear warning to stay cool and play along. Then he stepped off the bed and picked up the phone. "Hey, Grandpa," he said casually.
Dwight's voice was weak but definitely pissed off. "I hear Jane almost got herself into trouble out there. Luke, what the hell? How do you let her wander around alone at night?"
"Grandpa, it was just an accident," Luke said smoothly, heading out to the balcony to take the call.
Now it was just Daniel and Jane in the room, and the silence was thick.
Jane felt like she was still reeling from Luke's earlier threats—her eyes were red, and she was struggling to keep it together. But when Daniel walked in, all she could muster was a shy, embarrassed blush. Her cheeks were on fire.
She pulled the blanket up to her chin, glancing around nervously. She bit her lip and nodded at Daniel. "Hey, Daniel," she said softly.
Daniel and Jane had known each other for years. He was Dwight's adopted son and right-hand man, taking care of his health and running errands for the company. He was fiercely loyal to Dwight, and Luke couldn't buy him off no matter what.
Jane's mind was racing. 'No wonder Luke has dragged me back here to fake it. Dwight's suspicious about our marriage and has sent Daniel to suss things out. If Luke doesn't make this relationship look real, Dwight would see right through us.'
