"Good morning, Mrs. Drake. I'll fetch the doctor since you're awake," Daniel said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. He glanced at the rumpled sheets where Luke had been. He was clearly trying to figure out if their relationship was for real.
As Luke finished his call with Dwight, the family doctor, who had been waiting downstairs, entered the room.
After a careful check-up on Jane, the doctor removed the IV drip and said, "Mrs. Drake is on the mend. Her fever's gone, and the small cut on her hand has been taken care of. She just needs a tetanus shot to prevent infection.
"The wound on her forehead is a bit deep, but it doesn't need stitches—just keep it clean to avoid scarring. And her sprained ankle needs some rest.
"Apply the ointment every night before bed and give it a gentle massage to reduce swelling. Try to keep off it as much as possible."
Daniel quickly scribbled down the instructions for the antibiotics and nutritional supplements. Just then, Luke came back in from the balcony.
Daniel adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. "Mr. Drake, I've written down the details for the medication. Please make sure Mrs. Drake takes them on time."
He paused and then added, "Also, the doctor recommends applying this ointment and massaging her ankle every night before sleep to help with the bruising."
Though Daniel's tone was calm, his meaning was clear: he expected Luke to personally take care of Jane's ankle.
Jane watched nervously as Daniel handed the ointment bottle to Luke. Her heart skipped a beat, and she felt a sudden tightness in her chest.
It seemed reasonable for a husband to help his wife, but they weren't really married. The thought of Luke, who had always seemed cold and distant, applying ointment to her and even massaging her ankle was incredibly unsettling. Maybe he would just throw that bottle away.
To her surprise, Luke took the bottle without hesitation. "Got it," he said, his voice steady.
He looked down at Jane, his hand gently tousling her hair. "Honey, you listening? Be a good sport. When I put the ointment on, no complaining, okay?"
There was a warmth in Luke's voice that Jane had never heard before, almost tender. His fingers lightly pinched her cheek, and she felt a strange warmth spread through her.
But then she met his gaze, seeing nothing. Finally, she woke up.
As soon as Daniel left the room, Luke's hand slipped away from Jane's cheek. The faint smile on his lips disappeared, and the warmth in his eyes turned to cold indifference.
He raised an eyebrow, stood up, and tossed the bottle toward Jane. "Apply it yourself," he said, his voice cold and deep, with no trace of the kindness he'd shown when Daniel was around. It was as if the caring husband had all been an illusion.
Jane was momentarily stunned, but she quickly recovered. She wasn't disappointed, because she knew Luke would never treat her well.
In his eyes, she was nothing more than a woman with a sordid past and bad intentions—little better than a thief. She was well aware that he didn't actually like her.
"Mmm," she murmured, pressing her lips together and clutching the medicine bottle tightly.
Then, hesitating for a moment, she asked the question that had been bothering her the most. "I know this is just to deal with Daniel, but there's only one bed. How are we supposed to sleep?"
Luke's bedroom was opulent, but it had just one large bed. The only sofa in the room was a small one-person couch, hardly suitable for sleeping.
"Jane, how could you ask such a stupid question?" Luke's cold, low voice came from the walk-in closet.
"What?" Jane blinked, clearly confused.
Luke's thin lips curved into a cold, elegant smile. "When has a product ever been able to choose its own spot?" he said. "If you've forgotten who's the boss and who's the property in this contract, you'd better go back and check."
Then he got back, a thin wool blanket slung over his arm. He casually tossed it onto the floor beside the bed. "Daniel's here. No extra bedding. You'll sleep here now."
