"Wait, I'm supposed to sleep on the floor?" Jane exclaimed, pointing at the blanket on the ground. Her face was a picture of shock.
Luke raised just an eyebrow, his cold eyes locking onto hers. His handsome face was as unyielding as ever. He didn't need to say a word; his expression said it all.
Jane couldn't believe how heartless he was—making a sick person sleep on the floor in the dead of winter?
But she knew he had the upper hand. He was the boss, the one in charge, and the one paying the bills. She wouldn't really expect him to sleep on the floor.
"Fine, Mr. Luke. Good night," Jane said through gritted teeth, too furious to even think about her medicine. She climbed off the bed, wrapped herself in the thin blanket, and lay down on the floor, trying to get comfortable.
This night, Jane didn't dream at all. She'd expected to have a restless sleep, but she was just too drained from the day's terrifying ordeal. Despite the discomfort of sleeping on the floor, which left her body sore, she eventually drifted off into a deep slumber.
At 7 a.m. sharp, Luke stirred in the big bed and opened his eyes. In the soft morning light, his usually stern face looked more relaxed and even a bit languid.
As he swung his legs out of bed, he immediately noticed something was off. Instead of the cold floor, his foot landed on something soft and fuzzy.
He frowned and looked down. There was Jane, wrapped in a thin blanket, having somehow rolled over from the corner and ended up right at his feet.
Her injured head, lacking a pillow, was resting awkwardly on his slipper, and her small, bandaged hand was clutching his ankle. From his perspective, her fingers looked incredibly delicate and vulnerable.
Luke paused. Normally, he would have been annoyed by someone getting so close, but this time, he found himself looking at her differently. His gaze softened as it moved from her bandaged forehead to her small, innocent face, still relaxed in sleep.
Just then, Jane pouted and frowned in her sleep, as if she was still bothered by the hardness of the floor beneath her.
Luke's gaze sharpened, but not with irritation. Instead, he gently bent down, picked her up, and placed her on the bed.
Jane didn't wake up until 10 a.m., which was incredibly late for her. She figured the shock and injuries from the previous day had taken their toll, making her sleep like a log.
But it wasn't just that. She recalled the discomfort of lying on the hard floor earlier, feeling like she couldn't get comfortable. Yet at some point, she'd felt as if she was floating on a cloud—soft, warm, and utterly relaxing.
It was the kind of sleep she could have slept through all day. In fact, she might have, if Daniel hadn't sent a maid to rouse her, concerned that skipping breakfast would be bad for her health.
When Jane finally opened her eyes, she realized she wasn't on the cold floor anymore. Instead, she was in Luke's big, plush black bed.
And then it dawned on her—her face, so relaxed just moments ago, suddenly twisted with anxiety. 'Could I have actually climbed into Luke's bed last night while I was half-asleep?'
