Jane couldn't shake the anxiety that came from waking up in Luke's bed. But when she saw Daniel downstairs, her mind immediately turned to Dwight's condition, and she pushed everything else aside for the moment.
"Don't worry, Mrs. Drake. Dwight's doing okay now. But when he heard about your scare last night, his blood pressure shot up," Daniel explained.
"I'm the one who worried him. I should have been more careful," she said, biting her lip. She quickly called Dwight to check in on him.
After hanging up, she remembered something and asked, "Hey, Daniel, what happened with that guy who attacked me last night? The one in the alley behind Ashwood University?"
Her memory was still a bit hazy, and she wasn't sure if the creep who'd harassed her had been caught.
Daniel reassured her. "Mrs. Drake, everything's under control. Mr. Drake made sure the attacker was handed over to the police. With his influence, they're taking it seriously and won't let it drop.
"I heard they've even found some accomplices. No one who hurt you is getting away with it. Mr. Drake is making sure of that."
Jane's heart skipped a beat. "Wait, Mr. Drake?" She'd thought Colin had saved her last night, so she wasn't sure who Daniel was referring to.
"Yes, Mr. Luke Drake did all this," Daniel clarified.
Jane was even more confused. "Mr. Luke Drake?" She was sure she'd seen Colin last night. She'd been too afraid to ask Luke about it, worried he'd notice something was off. Colin had saved her, so how could it have been Luke?
Daniel continued, "Yeah, Luke was worried when he realized you hadn't come home yet. He personally led a search team last night. If he hadn't, who knows what could have happened?"
Luke, of course, hadn't told Dwight the real reason Jane hadn't made it to the hospital in time when Dwight was rushed to the ICU. He'd just said she'd been delayed at work and had an accident. That's why Jane hadn't been there when Dwight needed her.
Jane had heard Luke's story before, but what Daniel was saying—that Luke had led a search team to find her in the alley—didn't ring any bells. She couldn't remember any of it.
She tried to piece together the events of last night. Her head throbbed, but then something clicked. The fog in her memory began to clear.
She remembered standing under a streetlight, seeing a man walking toward her, backlit. He was wearing a black suit, black shoes, and black gloves. In her darkest moment, she'd seen his shadowed face. His sharp features had reminded her of Colin's, but his eyes were colder.
It finally hit her. Colin had left the country with Lydia weeks ago. The man who'd saved her last night couldn't have been Colin. It had to be Luke.
That night, Luke was out for a business dinner and didn't get home until around 11 PM. When he pushed open the bedroom door, his eyes instantly narrowed.
There was Jane, looking both alluring and completely unaware of his presence.
After her bath, she was wearing just a faded nightgown and was sitting cross-legged on a thin wool rug at the foot of the bed. Her eyebrows were slightly furrowed, and her eyes glistened with moisture.
She scooped up a bit of green ointment and began to apply it to her injured left ankle. Her face twisted in pain, and her foot trembled slightly under the pressure.
Luke's gaze sharpened as he took in the scene.
