"What are you doing?" Luke's deep, raspy voice cut through the silence from the doorway.
Jane had been gently massaging her aching ankle when the sound startled her, causing her to press down a little too hard.
She bit her lip and let out a soft whimper. The sound, unintentionally sweet and tender, reached Luke's ears.
Luke's frown deepened, the intensity in his eyes growing even more pronounced.
Jane still clutched the bottle, sitting there helplessly. She didn't notice Luke's return until he silently appeared in the doorway.
In a few quick strides, he was standing right in front of her. His tall, imposing figure loomed over her, stern and upright.
Without a word, he looked down at her coldly. His large hands, clad in black leather gloves, were casually tucked into the pockets of his suit pants, his expression icy and detached.
Jane's heart skipped a beat. She had stayed up late tonight to thank him in person, even though all their past encounters had been unpleasant. But yesterday in the alley, at her most desperate moment, he had saved her.
She had longed for Colin, but he never came. It was all in her imagination. Colin had lost faith in her and left her behind. Only Luke had helped her in that dark moment.
Jane pursed her lips. "You're back," she said. "Um, I wanted to tell you—"
"Give it to me." Luke's cold voice cut her off.
"Huh?" Jane's eyes narrowed slightly in confusion.
She froze for a moment, then realized he was referring to the ointment in her hand. Dazed, she handed it to him. "What's this for— Oh!"
He took the bottle with one large hand, while the other gently held her foot.
Luke's movement pulled Jane forward, causing her to lose her balance. She fell backward, but his strong arms caught her waist. He easily lifted her and placed her on the bed behind.
"Mr. Drake, what are you doing?" Her cheeks flushed bright red. Her tear-filled eyes stared at him, dazed and shaken.
Jane couldn't believe Luke had carried her to the large bed. What was even more surprising was that he pulled off his gloves, took hold of her left ankle, and began to rub ointment on it. He was actually helping her.
"You don't know how to apply ointment at all," Luke said, his voice still cold. But his palm on her ankle felt surprisingly warm.
Jane tried to pull her ankle away from his grip. "Now I know. I-I can do it myself."
"If you do it yourself, it won't heal for three months. Then Grandpa will just blame me," he replied, his tone matter-of-fact.
He took her foot gently in his hand, then began to rub the green ointment into her swollen ankle. Suddenly, he pressed down harder.
Jane's eyes widened in a flash. She bit her lip to hold back a cry. Luke was so much stronger than she was.
As his hand worked the ointment into her skin, Jane's face scrunched up, her eyelashes fluttering, and her cheeks flushed bright red.
She had a bruise on her ankle and hadn't dared to press down hard herself. But Luke kept increasing the pressure, as if he was completely unaware of her pain. It really hurt. She thought he was punishing her.
Jane bit her lip, tears welling up in her eyes as she watched Luke rub the bruise. She just wanted him to stop.
But as soon as she opened her mouth to speak, Luke pressed down even harder. Finally, a soft moan escaped her lips involuntarily.
Luke paused, his hand still on her smooth skin. He frowned and looked up at her, his dark eyes narrowing. He saw the tears in her eyes, her hair tousled, and she looked so fragile, as if she had been roughly handled.
"Jane?" he said her name suddenly. His voice was low and dangerous. "Do you know what the agreement says about Mrs. Drake's duties?"
