Jane's breath caught in her throat. She lay on her back, propped up on her elbows, gazing up at Luke's dark, handsome face with a hint of upset.
Fear washed over her, not from guilt, but from the raw panic of feeling like prey facing a predator lurking in the shadows.
"I-I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered. "Mr. Drake, Daniel said you saved me last night. I was so confused when I woke up that I forgot. I stayed up just to thank you in person. If there's nothing else, I think I'll go to bed."
She averted her eyes from Luke's. His gaze intensified, burning into her as if he could devour her on the spot—it was terrifying, like facing a wild animal.
Jane tried to wriggle free, pushing herself away from Luke, but his grip on her ankle was like a vise. Before she could react, his hand clamped down on her trembling shoulder, and with a firm tug, he pinned her back onto the bed.
As he leaned in, Jane's mind went completely blank. She was frozen, her thoughts scrambled by the tension.
She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could get a word out, Luke was right there, his face inches from hers.
His eyes bored into hers, a mix of disdain and something else flickering in their depths—something cold and almost menacing. Jane saw a possessive gleam, but there was something else there—something she couldn't quite place.
"M-Mr. Drake," she whispered, her voice trembling. Tears glistened on her eyelashes as she pleaded, "This is just a marriage of convenience... for Dwight. It's fake."
Even in her confusion, Jane could sense the desire in his eyes. She'd been with a man not long before, and she knew that look all too well.
"Who says a fake marriage means we can't be intimate?" Luke's voice was low and rough, cutting through her plea.
Jane's eyes widened in shock. 'Have I heard him right? How could he possibly want me? Like he hasn't despised me.'
Before she could process it, Luke's fingers were on her chin, tilting her head up. He studied her pale, frightened face. "Jane, did you even read that contract? When you sold yourself to me, you became mine—body and soul."
Her eyes filled with tears, and her face turned ghostly pale, as if she might shatter at the slightest touch. She was trembling uncontrollably.
Luke's eyes darkened, but he didn't let go. Anyway, she got a face that he liked. Instead, he leaned in and kissed her quivering lips.
