"Birth control," Hayden replied matter-of-factly. "Mr. Drake said there was no protection last night. He wants you to take an emergency pill to prevent pregnancy. He'll use protection next time." He delivered the message without emotion, ignoring Jane's pale face.
Jane pressed her lips together and clutched the railing tightly. She didn't mind taking the pill—she certainly didn't want Luke's child. But she felt demeaned, as if she were being treated like an object.
"Fine, I get it," Jane said, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She walked downstairs, and Hayden produced the pills, placing them on the coffee table.
"Hold on," Daniel interjected, snatching the pill away. "Dwight's greatest wish is for them to start a family soon. How could you give her something like this?"
"Daniel, we understand Mr. Dwight Drake's feelings," Hayden replied smoothly. "But Mr. Luke Drake thinks Mrs. Drake shouldn't get pregnant right now. She's still recovering and on other medications.
"That's why he sent me to arrange a full medical checkup for her today. We'll focus on restoring her health before trying for a baby."
He had prepared this explanation, knowing Daniel might object.
Daniel hesitated for a moment, but Hayden's reasoning made sense. Jane had recently been injured and was still on various medications. An unexpected pregnancy could be risky—something Daniel couldn't dismiss outright.
"Fine. I'll have the maid bring some water," Daniel said, and then handed Jane the pill with a glass of water.
Under Hayden's watchful gaze, Jane took a sip and swallowed the pill without complaint. "Okay, Hayden, I've taken it," she said calmly, meeting his gaze.
Jane's eyes were so clear that Hayden felt a moment of discomfort. He quickly looked away and said, "Mrs. Drake, let's head to the hospital. They're waiting for your checkup."
After Jane and Hayden left, Daniel entered the room. He glanced at the vitamin bottle on the bedside table, then calmly took the birth control pill he had swapped earlier from his pocket and tossed it in the trash.
Dwight cared so deeply for Jane. He would never want her to take something like that.
Jane followed Hayden to the hospital. After a few routine tests, he led her into a cold, sterile room.
A female doctor in a white coat and mask was waiting. "Jane Ritter, right?" she asked briskly.
"Yes," Jane replied softly.
"Alright, lift your skirt and lie down on the chair over there," the doctor instructed, pointing to a lone examination chair.
Jane stared at the chair, feeling a wave of dizziness. "Lift my skirt and lie down?" she repeated, her voice trembling.
"Never had a pelvic exam before?" the doctor asked, not looking up from her preparations. "Just lift your skirt, lie down, and spread your legs. We don't have all day."
Jane's face turned pale, and her fingers clenched nervously. "Doctor, what is this test for?" she asked, her voice shaking.
