"HIV testing," the doctor replied, her tone matter-of-fact. "You scheduled this appointment yourself, didn't you? Normally, we recommend a full STD panel—it checks for common infections. But don't worry, our hospital is top-notch..."
Jane tuned out the rest of the explanation. Her mind was spinning, and she felt like she was drowning in a sea of buzzing voices.
She barely registered how she ended up in the chair or how the doctor used the cold instrument to collect samples. All she felt was a deep sense of humiliation, as if her pride and dignity had been trampled on.
Luke probably saw her as tainted, so he had paused briefly last night. He had treated her so poorly, and now he was sending her for this exam.
She felt utterly humiliated and insulted and thought, 'If he thinks I'm dirty, he shouldn't have slept with me in the first place. I'm a human, not an object. I feel sad, just as others do.'
Jane left the examination room with tears streaming down her face, her body trembling as she bit her lip to hold back her sobs.
Just then, Hayden approached. "Ms. Ritter, Mr. Drake wants to see you," he said before Jane could ask any questions.
Without Daniel around, Hayden had reverted to calling her "Ms. Ritter" instead of "Mrs. Drake." But Jane didn't care about that. All she cared about was seeing Luke.
He was probably at the office now, and she needed to confront him directly. She had to ask him why he slept with her and then sent her for this degrading test. If he looked down on her so much, he shouldn't have been with her.
Hayden guided Jane to the Drake Group headquarters in downtown, the city's most iconic skyscraper. They rode a private elevator straight to the top floor. This time, instead of heading to the meeting room, Hayden took her directly to the CEO's office.
"Mr. Drake, she's here," Hayden announced softly, knocking gently on the door.
"Bring her in." There came Luke's deep, cool voice from inside.
Jane's heart skipped a beat. The memories of the previous night came rushing back: Luke's commanding presence, his broad chest, strong build, and those piercing eyes. The anger she'd felt after the hospital visit began to fade, overshadowed by those vivid memories.
Taking a deep breath, Jane pushed those thoughts aside. The intimacy of the night before hadn't changed anything fundamental between them. She couldn't afford to complicate things further.
She opened the door and stepped inside. This was her first time in Luke's office, and it was just as imposing as his bedroom—vast and dominated by a monotonous black: the carpet, walls, sofa, desk, everything.
At the black desk, Luke sat in a crisp suit, looking both handsome and formidable. His gaze was intense, openly possessive, with an undercurrent of raw desire.
"M-Mr. Drake..." Jane's voice wavered. His bold stare sent a shiver down her spine.
Before, Luke's eyes had been cold and distant. Now, they burned with possession, as if she were his exclusive prize. She felt utterly exposed and defenseless, with nowhere to hide.
"Come here," Luke said, his lips curling into a slight smile as he beckoned her with a crooked finger.
Jane's mind went completely blank, but she moved toward Luke without thinking. As she stood in front of him, her eyes—still puffy from the tears she'd shed at the hospital—caught the sunlight streaming through the window and seemed to sparkle. She watched him nervously, her movements cautious.
Luke's eyes narrowed as he took her in. He pulled her onto his lap and whispered in her ear, his voice deep and rough, "Are you angry?"
