When Hayden dropped Jane off at her apartment, she was still in a daze.
She hadn't quite caught what Luke had whispered into her ear before she left his office.
All she could remember was the intensity of his gaze, deep and unreadable as he trapped her by the desk, and the warmth of his hand, as if it could scorch her.
She couldn't figure out why things had ended up that way. She buried her face in her pillow, frustration overwhelming her.
She had wanted to confront him, to stand up for herself. But instead, she had walked straight into his trap.
Not only had she failed to vent her anger, but she had also ended up being taken advantage of by him again.
Jane couldn't help but feel pathetic. It seemed like she had never stood a chance against Luke.
Just then, the maid, Mandy, barged in without knocking.
"Mrs. Drake, do you still need these? If not, I'll throw them out," Mandy said, holding two black plastic bags with a look of disdain and waving them in front of Jane.
She thought, 'This woman, forced into Luke's life by Dwight, really didn't have much taste.'
Mandy had been sent by Daniel to clean up for Jane, and she'd come across the two scruffy bags while tidying up.
If Daniel hadn't mentioned that these might belong to Jane, Mandy would have assumed they were just trash. But to her surprise, Jane, a wife in a wealthy family, was actually using plastic bags for her belongings.
"No. Those things are important to me. I need them. Please give them to me. Thank you," Jane quickly replied.
When Jane saw the two bags, she remembered the shattered ring that Luke had crushed was still in one of them.
She had bought the ring for 60 thousand dollars from Ella with a lot of effort. It was proof of something significant, so she definitely needed it.
Jane hurriedly snatched the bags from Mandy's hands.
Noticing how urgently Jane grabbed the bags, Mandy thought there must be something valuable inside. She decided to stick around to see what it was.
But when Jane emptied the bags, Mandy's expectations were dashed.
Inside the bags were just some cheap, random daily necessities and clothes. But there was one small tin box, which Jane carefully took out.
'Maybe there's something special inside the box?' Mandy thought. She regretted not opening it earlier to see if there was something valuable inside. If there was, she could have kept it for herself.
Just as she wondered, Jane opened the box. A pile of broken ring pieces lay quietly inside.
"Wait. What the hell are all these? It's a ring, right? But it's broken. Why would you keep these shards? The ring doesn't look like it's worth much, and the diamond is so tiny!" Mandy exclaimed.
Mandy had worked in the Drake Manor for years. Even though she was just a maid, she knew that diamonds under a carat weren't worth much.
Plus, she thought the diamond Jane had so carefully placed in the box was probably either fake or of low quality.
Jane bit her lip, not responding to Mandy. She was too focused on the broken pieces, trying to figure out how to fix the ring.
"Well, are you even listening to me?" Mandy muttered, rolling her eyes before stomping downstairs in annoyance.
That night, Daniel wasn't home. He had gone to the hospital to take care of Dwight.
Seeing that Jane was alone, Mandy decided to sneak out and play cards with her friends.
Soon, the outside world was enveloped in complete darkness.
Jane sighed as she stared at the broken pieces of the ring in front of her, unsure how to fix them.
The tools she had at home weren't enough, and it seemed she would need to take the ring to a workshop another day.
Just then, her stomach growled loudly, making her rub her belly in discomfort.
She had skipped breakfast for her physical exam, and then, when she went to see Luke, things had taken an unexpected turn.
When she got home, she was so focused on trying to repair the ring that she had completely forgotten about food.
She reluctantly put the ring aside for now. Starving and exhausted, she decided to head downstairs.
When she reached the kitchen, she noticed Mandy wasn't around, but she didn't mind.
She opened the fridge, which was stocked with fresh ingredients, and decided to cook for herself.
Not knowing whether Daniel would return that night, she made extra food, thinking she could invite him to join her for dinner when he did.
At 7:30 p.m., Luke opened the door to the apartment, and the mouthwatering scent of freshly cooked food immediately filled the air.
He frowned slightly, surprised by how the rich aroma stirred his appetite. It was rare for him to feel this way.
