As the door closed, Jane called out, "Daniel, you're back. Please have a seat. I've just made some of my signature dishes. It'll be ready in a minute."
Wearing a soft pink apron, Jane peeked her head out from the kitchen.
Her long brown hair cascaded over her shoulders, softening her delicate features and making her look even more graceful.
But when she saw the tall figure standing in the doorway, her expression froze for a moment.
"Mr. Drake..." Jane said slowly, her warm smile instantly fading.
Her hands, which had fallen naturally by her sides, clenched instinctively.
Luke raised an eyebrow and said coldly, "Daniel went to the hospital with Dwight. Didn't he tell you?"
"I... I took a nap in my room this afternoon. Maybe Daniel didn't wake me when he left," Jane quickly responded, coming up with an excuse to cover up the fact that she'd been fixing her ring earlier.
But the moment she finished speaking, she caught a knowing look in Luke's eyes.
At that instant, she realized he'd misunderstood her words. "No, that's not what I meant..." she said, trying to clarify.
Luke studied her face, which was slightly flushed now, his gaze growing more intense. "It's fine. I know you had a tough afternoon."
Jane understood what he was implying and couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze.
She quickly shifted the topic, saying, "By the way, Mr. Drake, you haven't had dinner yet, right?
"Mandy isn't home tonight, so I cooked. Um... I know you're not a fan of my cooking, but if you want, you can go out and eat now, or have Hayden bring takeout."
Even though Jane acted as if she genuinely cared for him, she was secretly hoping he'd leave.
After she moved in, Luke had shown nothing but contempt for her cooking.
Jane figured there was no way he'd want to eat the dinner she made. She just hoped this would get rid of Luke.
But to her surprise, after she finished speaking, Luke changed his shoes and walked right in. "No need. I'm actually hungry. I'll make do with it," he said.
Jane, who had been carrying the dishes to the table, froze in her tracks.
Luke had always said he hated her and her cooking, but now he wanted to eat with her. She didn't even know what to say.
She had just set three dishes on the table when she noticed Luke's brow furrowed deeply. His expression clearly showed his displeasure.
Clearly, even though he'd promised not to mistreat her if she agreed to be his woman, Luke still carried himself with cold arrogance.
'See? Not only is he dismissing me, but now he's rejecting my cooking,' Jane thought bitterly.
"Mr. Drake, if these dishes aren't to your liking, I can order takeout for you—" she started to offer.
But before she could finish, Luke's low, magnetic voice cut her off. "Is this what you usually eat for dinner?"
"Huh? What's wrong with it?" Jane asked in confusion, glancing up at him.
The four dishes she had prepared, like the roasted asparagus, tomato salad, stuffed eggplant, and pumpkin soup, were all made from ingredients she had in the fridge.
She hadn't had time to defrost any meat, so she made do with what was on hand.
Though the dishes were all vegetarian, they were delicious. The smell alone was proof of how tasty they were.
"These are actually really good. You should try them," Jane said. Worried he might not believe her, she picked up a fork and put some food on his plate.
But then, Luke's cold, lazy voice came again. "These dishes are so lacking in nutrients. They won't contribute much to your body's growth. No wonder you're so skinny. I could practically pick you up with one hand."
