Time seemed to drag on forever. Jane felt as though she were drifting in a warm, weightless haze, constantly floating without a care.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally drifted into a deep sleep.
The next morning, after breakfast, Mandy informed Jane that Hayden had arrived.
Mandy said, "Ms. Ritter, Mr. Drake specifically instructed that the latest spring collection from top brands be delivered to your walk-in closet. There are clothes, shoes, and bags.
"And we've also set up all the skincare and makeup you'll need on your vanity.
"Mr. Drake would like you to wear outfits that reflect your status when you go out from now on. You know how important his position is. No one knows about your relationship...
"But if you're ever in public together, he wants you to maintain your dignity and avoid embarrassing him.
Hayden didn't beat around the bush.
The message was clear. Even though her marriage to Luke was more of a convenient arrangement to handle Dwight, Jane still had to be careful when appearing with Luke. She couldn't afford to mess with Luke's reputation.
"I understand, Hayden. I'll stick to the guidelines," Jane replied casually. After all, Luke was the one paying for everything. She just had to go along with it for a year.
Hayden was a little surprised by how easily she agreed. He thought Jane would at least push back on Luke's demands.
But just to be safe, he added, "Ms. Ritter, please make sure you only wear the clothes from your walk-in closet and use the makeup provided. And one more thing, Mr. Drake likes your look to match his style."
Jane raised an eyebrow, catching something odd in his tone. 'What exactly does Mr. Drake like?' she wondered.
She stood up and walked over to the closet, sliding open the glass doors. On the left side, an entire section was packed with women's clothing.
But it wasn't what she expected. The clothes were all top brands, but every single piece, from tops to skirts, jackets to dresses, was purple.
The closet was filled with every shade of purple one could imagine, like the light purple, dark purple, lavender, and even purple-blue.
The only other colors were black and white, but they were mostly limited to shoes, bags, and outerwear.
Jane was stunned. 'How does Luke know I like purple? Wait, he must like purple, too, right?' she thought.
But from what she knew about him, she thought he preferred black. His wardrobe, his home décor, and even his huge bed were all black.
Suddenly, something clicked in her mind. She turned around and hurried back to the vanity.
Opening one of the drawers, she found it loaded with high-end makeup. She grabbed a few lipsticks and twisted off the caps.
Then she sighed in relief. 'Thank goodness Luke didn't pick out purple lipstick for me. If he did, I'd probably never want to leave the house.'
But as she relaxed, she noticed something strange. All the lipsticks on the vanity were various shades of pink, like light pink, soft pink, deep pink, and so on.
She used to wear neutral colors like rose or classic red for formal events. But now, she was more low-maintenance and hardly wore lipstick at all.
These pale pinks definitely weren't her style. She wasn't a teenager anymore.
"Hayden, did Mr. Drake really arrange all this?" Jane asked, holding up a light pink lipstick and turning to face him.
Hayden nodded. "Yes, this is all part of Mr. Drake's plan for you. Now, Ms. Ritter, please get ready. We're heading to the hospital to see Dwight."
