Thanks to Jane's testimony, the police finally had enough evidence to move forward.
At first, Ella stuck to her story, claiming that she and Jane were relatives, that she couldn't possibly hurt her, and that she had no reason to commit the crime.
But after taking Jane's statement, the police discovered something they hadn't known before. These so-called cousins had a long-standing, unresolved feud. With that, they not only found Ella's motive but also gathered evidence of her committing perjury.
"Ms. Ritter, your statement has been recorded. Thanks for your cooperation. The investigation will continue. You can go home and wait for further updates," an officer said.
"Sir, please wait a second," Jane said. "I need to know what will happen to Ella? Will she be released?"
The officer hesitated, sensing Jane's anxiety. He gave her a reassuring look. "She? Don't worry. If the case is finalized, she'll definitely face legal consequences.
"For instigating a kidnapping, she could get anywhere from five to ten years in prison. Until the trial's over, she'll stay in custody. She won't be able to hurt you."
Understanding her concerns, the officer walked her to the door of the police station before turning to leave.
But as soon as Jane stepped outside, she was cornered by her aunt, Lily, and her uncle, Johnson, who had rushed over.
"Jane, what did you tell the cops just now?" Lily pointed at her, furious. "You heartless brat! You're really trying to destroy our daughter, aren't you?"
Johnson added, "Yeah, Jane, no matter what, Ella is your cousin. We're family. Why can't we talk things through? Why go straight to the police like this?
"I know you're mad because she asked you for 60 thousand dollars last time, but I already talked to her about it. Please, for my sake, don't make things worse with her. She's just thoughtless. She didn't mean it."
Lily shouted at her while Johnson tried to convince her, making it sound like Jane had done something unforgivable to their family. They had completely forgotten that Jane was the victim here.
"Family?" Jane said coldly. "Johnson, when have you ever treated me like family? When my mom and I were abandoned by the Ritter family, what did you do? When my mom was in the hospital and needed money the most, how did you help us?
"I don't even want to argue with you about that anymore. But what Ella did was incite a kidnapping. She's my cousin, but she almost destroyed me. And now, you're blaming me for this?"
Jane was genuinely confused. The person who made the mistake was Ella. She couldn't understand why Lily and Johnson blamed her.
Right then, Lily lunged at Jane, grabbing her by the arm and trying to drag her back into the police station. She didn't care about anything Jane had said.
She yelled, "You filthy piece of trash! You were already ruined to begin with. Who knows how many men have slept with you? And now you're blaming Ella?
"You better go back and change your statement. Tell the cops this has nothing to do with Ella. Give me back my daughter!"
In Lily's eyes, Ella could do no wrong, and Jane was the only one to blame. She saw Jane as nothing more than a worthless burden, and the fact that Jane had dragged her precious daughter into all of this was simply unforgivable.
"Let go. I'm not changing my statement. Let go of—" Jane insisted.
However, as Jane tried to pull away, Lily shoved her hard. Jane lost her balance and nearly fell down the stairs.
In that split second, a man's big hand caught her, steadying her. "Watch out!"
