The man, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and exuding an air of elegance, reached out from behind and steadied Jane's arm.
"Are you okay?" Daniel asked, frowning slightly.
Jane let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Daniel. I'm fine now..."
She let out a sigh of relief. If Daniel hadn't caught her, her left ankle, which was just starting to recover, might've been hurt again.
When Lily saw Daniel, who was dressed in high-end designer clothes and helping Jane up, her eyes immediately narrowed, and her gaze turned sharp. "Who are you to Jane?" she asked. "Oh, no wonder you're acting all tough now, trying to stand up to us.
"I was wondering how you could afford all those expensive clothes. Guess you've already moved on to a new sugar daddy? You're just like your shameless mother, always getting involved with men like this. Both of you are just trash!"
Furious and embarrassed, Lily launched into a nasty tirade, insulting not only Jane but even her mother.
Jane's palms trembled, her fists clenching. She wanted to slap her right then and there.
But at that moment, Daniel's cold, stern voice cut through. "Ma'am, this is right in front of a police station, and there are cameras everywhere.
"The things you just said have defamed Ms. Ritter. We could go inside right now and pull the footage. You could be facing charges for defamation."
Daniel adjusted his glasses, his eyes calm but chilling. After all, he was Dwight's trusted right-hand man and had graduated from law school with top honors. His demeanor alone made it clear he wasn't someone to mess with.
Lily was momentarily silenced. "D-Don't try to intimidate me," she stammered. "Do you even know who I am? The Judd family isn't someone you want to offend."
Daniel said, "I don't care who you are, but you really did break the law. If you don't believe me, the police station is right behind you. You can walk right in and ask.
"Publicly threatening Ms. Ritter and trying to get her to lie? Let's see if the police charge you with obstruction of justice when they come out."
"I..." Lily's throat tightened. She struggled to respond, but then she hesitated, realizing the weight of Daniel's words.
To her, Daniel didn't look like just anyone. His presence and his attire showed that he wasn't someone to challenge.
Used to mingling with the wealthy elite, Lily hesitated, afraid of crossing the wrong person. She grabbed her husband, Johnson, ready to slip away. But before leaving, Lily shot a venomous glare at Jane. "Don't think this is over!
"Jane, you think I don't know what you're up to with that rich guy? You're not scared of me, but your mother is still in the hospital. You hurt Ella, and I swear I won't let you off the hook!"
Once Lily and Johnson left, Jane turned to thank Daniel. "Thank you, Dwight, for stepping in."
Daniel frowned, his expression darkening. "Those two... are your uncle and aunt?"
He had overheard some of their argument as he walked over. He knew Jane's family situation was complicated, and it seemed like she had her fair share of problems, but he hadn't expected it to be this bad.
"Yeah." Jane gave a bitter smile. "They're my uncle and aunt. Sorry you had to witness all that."
The family drama she had desperately tried to keep private was now out in the open for everyone to see. Passersby stared, and even Daniel had been a firsthand witness to her humiliation.
"It's not your fault. You don't need to apologize," Daniel said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with a stern look. "But you should definitely watch out for what they said when they left."
He added, "Your aunt said she knew which hospital your mother was in. Is that really something you can ignore?"
Daniel's words hit Jane like a ton of bricks. She exclaimed, "Oh, no. My aunt and uncle know where my mom's staying. Last time, she even tried to pull the oxygen tube under my mom's nose.
"Daniel, my mom's still in a coma and waiting for surgery. She can't afford any more trouble."
Daniel thought for a moment and then said calmly. "Don't worry. I'll handle this."
In the end, Daniel arranged for Jane's mother, Rose, to be transferred to a better hospital.
Rose was moved from the public hospital to the best private hospital in Jovinia, where Dwight was also treated.
Jane spent the entire afternoon working with Daniel to make sure everything was taken care of.
By the time Rose was settled in and Daniel dropped her off at home, it was already around 4 P.M.
As soon as they entered the apartment, they saw Luke sitting on the couch.
"Mr. Drake!" Jane instinctively called out as soon as she saw him.
Luke raised his eyes, glancing at Jane and Daniel walking in together. His cold, deep eyes hardened, growing darker with each passing moment.
"Are you okay?" Daniel asked, frowning slightly.
Jane let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Daniel. I'm fine now..."
