"I-I didn't..." Jane choked, struggling to breathe. She coughed hard, her innocent face turning red. "It—it was about that thing in the alley behind Ashwood University. The police told me the suspect might be related to my relatives."
"Daniel happened to go with me to the station. He felt sorry for me... He was worried those relatives might go after my mom, so he helped me transfer her to another hospital..." She tried her best to explain under Luke's dark, suspicious stare.
Hearing that Daniel had helped with the hospital transfer because of the Ashwood University incident, Luke frowned and loosened his grip on her neck just a little.
"Just because of that?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. There was a sharp glint of doubt in his cold eyes.
Clearly, he didn't fully believe her. After all, he couldn't imagine a woman like Jane passing up the chance to play the victim in front of Dwight.
He even suspected that if Dwight really paid and made all the arrangements for her mom, Jane might just turn around and break their deal.
"Y-yeah... just that." Jane finally managed to catch her breath.
She looked up at Luke's deep, unreadable eyes and explained, "Daniel just saw me waiting at the bus stop by the hospital and gave me a ride. At the station, he overheard my aunt threatening me, so he stepped in.
"Mr. Drake, I know I already took your money. I know I owe Dwight a lot, and I'm in no position to ask for anything. Believe it or not, but I'm not that shameless. I would never ask Dwight to arrange surgery for my mom."
Even when things were at their worst, Jane had never thought about turning to Dwight.
Because she knew, if she did, that kind and gentle old man would help her without asking for anything in return. And then, she'd never be able to repay him.
She had nothing of equal value to offer, and Dwight would never accept anything back from her anyway.
"At least you're thinking straight." Luke held her chin, studying her face for a few seconds. "Remember, in my grandpa's eyes, you're my wife."
"If you ever make him doubt that—even a little—I don't care what your reason is. You and your mom will never be able to stay in Jovinia again," he added.
"I—I understand..." Jane bit her trembling lip and nodded.
Looking at the tears in her eyes and the soft pink of her lips, the anger in Luke's eyes finally eased a little.
He forced her lips apart with his long fingers, prying open the teeth she was biting down on. Leaning close to her trembling mouth, he lowered his voice and said, "What, scared now?"
Jane whispered, "H-how could I be scared of you, Mr. Drake?"
Her nose stung a little, and she turned her eyes away, not daring to look at him. But Luke grabbed her face and made her meet his gaze. He smiled, a hint of cold amusement flickering in his eyes.
"Is that so?" he asked.
For a moment, Jane felt like she couldn't breathe.
His look was dangerous—no doubt about it—but there was something strangely magnetic about it too. As she stared at his striking face, so close to hers, her heartbeat started to race.
Maybe he'd finally had enough of toying with her, because Luke gently ran his fingers over her cheek and said lazily, "Jane, you really aren't that smart.
"Instead of wasting your time trying to win over Daniel, you should've just focused on me. You know you'd get way more out of it, right?"
Jane blinked, her shoulders trembling slightly, but said nothing.
Seeing how scared and silent she was, something dark flashed through Luke's eyes. Then, before she could speak, he leaned in and bit her lips hard—possessive and rough.
It felt like punishment for her hesitation. He bit her lips slowly, aggressively, with a kind of raw intensity.
