Almost every inch of Jane's soft skin was marked with Luke's presence.
Later, she couldn't even remember how she ended up in the upstairs bedroom. All she knew was that her body had sunk deep into the black sheets, soaked in Luke's scent.
And Luke—the one who started it all—was like a panther that never got enough, pushing her to the edge again and again.
Sometime after 7 p.m., Jane woke up to the sound of loud knocking.
"Mrs. Drake, dinner's ready. Come down and eat," Mandy, the maid, called from outside the door.
All Jane wanted was to sleep. She didn't even want to lift a finger. But Mandy wouldn't stop, her voice constantly pulling Jane back from sleep.
With no choice, Jane gave a weak, "Coming," and forced herself to get up.
By the time Jane sat up, the sky outside was already pitch black.
Only a small bedside lamp was on in the room. Luke was gone.
She was glad he wasn't there. At least this way, she didn't have to feel awkward.
She grabbed one of Luke's robes from beside the bed and slowly walked to the bathroom.
She turned on the light—and froze when she saw herself in the mirror.
Her long hair was messy and loose, falling over her shoulders. Her skin was glowing under the bathroom lights.
The loose men's robe she wore was way too big for her. It wrapped her small frame completely, almost like the robe's owner was holding her from behind—strong and possessive.
And under the slightly open collar, her slender neck was covered with marks—deep, vivid kisses, proof of Luke's overwhelming need to claim her. The bruises were red and striking, like drops of wine staining her skin.
Jane blinked, staring at her reflection in disbelief. Deep down, she silently blamed Luke for being so rough.
Her face burned bright red. She looked away from the mirror, quickly fixed herself up, and changed into a high-necked loungewear set before heading downstairs.
Just as she stepped out of the master bedroom, she saw Mandy waiting at the top of the stairs, looking annoyed.
When Jane finally came out, Mandy lowered her voice and muttered, "Mrs. Drake, you really know how to take it easy. Slept in late this morning, then came back and slept again in the afternoon.
"I already set the table, but I still had to call you over and over just to get you downstairs. If Mr. Drake didn't tell us not to go into his room without permission, I would've dragged you out myself."
"Sorry, I was just a little tired..." Jane explained awkwardly.
"I don't care if you were tired," Mandy said. "Even if you are his wife, you can't keep Mr. Drake waiting. Dinner's been ready for a while, and he's been sitting there waiting for you.
"He is always picky about food. If it gets cold and he doesn't want to eat it, good luck dealing with that."
Mandy had been at this apartment longer than Daniel. When Daniel wasn't around, she'd seen firsthand how cold Luke could be toward Jane. So she never really treated Jane with respect.
Especially after seeing how Jane didn't act like a real lady of the house—she dressed plainly, never asked for much, and even used plastic bags to carry things—Mandy had started to look down on her. To her, Jane seemed poorer than the maids.
Jane frowned slightly. She didn't care much about Mandy's attitude. She just blinked and asked, "Wait, Mr. Drake's having dinner at home tonight?"
She was surprised. She'd thought Luke left right after sleeping with her. After all, he only seemed interested in her when having sex, and barely tolerated being in the same room with her otherwise.
Last night's dinner had felt like a fluke. Jane didn't think Luke actually wanted to eat with her.
"Yeah, Mr. Drake's been waiting at the table for a while now. So please, Mrs. Drake, do me a favor and hurry up," Mandy said, turning and heading downstairs with an annoyed look.
Jane hesitated for a few seconds, then followed her down.
As soon as she stepped into the dining room, Luke looked up. His unreadable eyes landed on her calmly and without hurry.
Seeing Jane in a light purple loungewear set, her long hair loose and her whole vibe soft and lazy, Luke curled a finger at her, his voice low. "Come. Have dinner with me."
