Jane didn't dare say no to Luke's request. She walked over obediently.
She meant to sit beside him, but he pulled her straight onto his lap, wrapping her in his arms.
In that moment, Jane instinctively looked around. She was relieved to see Mandy still busy in the kitchen, not yet back in the dining room.
She quickly turned to Luke, hoping he'd let her go.
But when she lowered her eyes, she saw how the soft lighting cast a warm golden hue over his sharp features. His lashes were long and defined, and the usual chill in his eyes seemed to have softened.
For a second—maybe it was just her imagination—Jane thought Luke seemed to be in a good mood.
"Mr. Drake, I-I can actually sit and eat on my own," she said softly, her voice sweet like candy.
She wanted to remind him that she wasn't a kid and didn't need to sit in his lap to eat. Especially not with someone like Mandy around.
With others nearby, she always got shy. Now her cheeks were burning, and she couldn't even lift her head. A visible flush spread across her delicate face, so red it looked like it might drip.
Luke had only meant to tease her a little. But when he saw how rare and deeply she blushed, his interest grew even more.
"No need. I'll hold you while we eat," he murmured in her ear, his voice low on purpose, then casually ran his fingers across her warm palm.
Luke shot a cold glance toward Mandy, who had just stepped out of the kitchen. "Bring the food."
"Yes, Mr. Drake." In front of him, Mandy didn't dare show the impatience she'd shown upstairs. She moved quickly, bringing out dish after carefully prepared dish from the kitchen.
Since Luke was eating at home tonight, Mandy had gone all out to show off her cooking. In total, she'd made seven dishes.
As soon as the food came out, Jane's eyes lit up. And when the final dish—baked sea bass—was placed on the table, her bright eyes had gone even wider.
She couldn't help but admire how much Luke knew how to enjoy life. Dinner was way more luxurious when he was home.
Jane licked her lips without thinking. Her eyes stayed glued to the baked sea bass, and she even sniffed a little, soaking in the smell.
She loved fish—especially baked sea bass. Back when she was still the heiress of the Ritter family, she'd even learned to make it from their private chef.
Now she was poor, she mostly cooked simple meals. She hadn't touched expensive sea bass in a long time.
Just then, she heard Luke's cool voice. "Wait. Take your meds before you eat."
"What meds?" she asked, looking at him instinctively.
Jane's brows tightened. The first thing that popped into her mind was the last time Luke had Hayden bring her emergency contraception.
She thought maybe Luke felt like protection wasn't enough. After forcing her to take a pill once before, now he was going to make her take another.
At that moment, a wave of humiliation and buried emotion flooded her chest.
