Jane didn't realize that her slight hesitation when taking the soup had already offended Mandy.
She kept her head down and took small sips of the warm soup.
The herbal aroma mixed with the sweet flavor of butternut squash made it taste really good. After just one sip, Jane felt a warm current flow through her body.
Her hands and feet were usually cold, especially in winter. After drinking the soup, the chill in her limbs seemed to ease a bit.
Setting down the bowl, Jane timidly looked up at Luke, who was still holding her.
"Mr. Drake, thank you," she said softly, her voice shy and hesitant but sincere.
"Why thank me?" Luke's expression tightened, cold and distant.
Jane's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure why Luke was acting so cold and aloof. It was clearly him who made her drink that soup. If she wasn't mistaken, he cared about her.
Anyway, for someone like Jane, whose hands and feet were often cold, that soup had really warmed her up.
"Thank you for ordering that soup for me," she said, biting her lip and trying to sound earnest.
To her surprise, Luke just sneered and cut her off indifferently. "Don't flatter yourself. I don't have the luxury to order things like that for you."
He paused for a few seconds, looking at Jane's slightly embarrassed eyes, then added, "I'm not interested in what you eat. It was Daniel who asked Mandy to make the soup for you. If you want to thank someone, thank him."
Jane's breath caught instantly. Her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
She realized she'd been too naive, foolishly thinking Luke would bother with such a small kindness for her.
Sure enough, a brief lapse of thought could lead to awkward misunderstandings like this. Jane thought she should remind herself often who she really was.
"Oh, it was Daniel. Well, Daniel has indeed been taking good care of me," Jane said, lowering her eyes. Her trembling lashes hid the fleeting panic and awkwardness beneath.
She felt utterly ashamed.
Jane pushed herself up from Luke's lap and slid off. "Well, let's eat, Mr. Drake. The food's getting cold. We don't want to waste all the dishes Mandy made."
Feeling Jane suddenly leave his embrace, Luke felt an empty kind of loss. He frowned slightly, his eyes darkening.
Forcing himself to ignore the strange feeling, Luke didn't pull Jane back. Nor did he explain the soup or care what she thought. He simply fell silent and picked up the fork beside him.
By then, Jane had already started eating. On the table were baked sea bass, grilled shrimp, a vegetable salad, roasted lamb chops, and more. Each dish looked delicate and well-prepared.
She kept her head down, afraid to look at Luke, and kept stuffing food into her mouth.
After a while, Jane ate her fill and felt a long-lost happiness from enjoying a good meal.
Finally, she put down her fork and looked up—only to see Luke sitting beside her, barely touching his food.
His fork lay clean on the side, and his plate showed no signs of being eaten. In contrast, Jane's plate was full of food, and she had eaten heartily, a sharp difference from Luke.
Jane was silent, a sudden unease growing inside her.
Luke hadn't touched his fork, yet she had eaten so much. She felt this might not be right.
At last, Jane spoke softly, "Mr. Drake."
She glanced at him sideways, her bright eyes full of hesitation. "Why aren't you eating?"
Luke glanced back nonchalantly.
"I have no appetite," he said quietly, as if sulking at someone, his tone laced with barely noticeable irritation.
