Ever since that day when Jane first properly cooked for Luke, the tension between them seemed to ease considerably.
Every morning before work, Jane would make breakfast for Luke. At first, she only made the spaghetti he already approved of. Later, she began preparing a rotating breakfast menu.
Whatever Jane had eaten the day before, Luke would request, and an identical serving would appear on his plate the next morning.
Over time, not just breakfast, but even dinner, reverted to the way it was before Daniel and Mandy moved in, with all the meals being prepared solely by Jane.
Luke no longer forced Jane to cook dinner, only to waste or disdain her food.
Now, he would show up at the table on time every day, taking his time to finish everything she made. Then, each night, as if it were the most natural thing, he'd tease her a little.
"It's my midnight snack," Luke would say.
Jane had no idea whether Luke still held that deep-seated prejudice against her like he used to. She thought, 'But at least, his stomach seems to approve of my cooking.'
Time flew by. A week later, the police investigation had wrapped up. It was all but certain that Ella would be prosecuted.
Ella could only curse her terrible luck when she heard the news. She fumed to herself, 'That night, I was so sure I could ruin Jane and make her the laughingstock of all Jovinia.'
'But who would've thought Jane had nine lives? Some mysterious guy just had to swoop in and save her.'
Ella hadn't expected that just a few days later, the police would show up at her door and haul her straight to the station.
After learning that Scott and Jasmine cracked under police interrogation and both ratted her out, Ella cursed inside, 'Those two good-for-nothings.'
Since Scott and Jasmine swore up and down that Ella was the mastermind behind everything, the police denied Ella's bail.
To make things worse, even the top-notch lawyer Ella's mom had hired at great expense could only shake his head and sigh, telling Ella to prepare for the worst.
Just like that, Ella had already spent a week in the detention center. Now, facing prosecution, she refused to accept the outcome.
Ella shouted, "No. I won't plead guilty. I never laid a finger on Jane. It's that woman Jane who's jealous of me. She's trying to frame me.
"Please, I beg you. Believe me! Listen to my testimony. Jane is shameless; she sleeps around with anyone. Even her father disowned her. How can you trust anything she says?"
The police ignored Ella's protests and snapped, "The victim has already identified you. There's no point in denying it. Besides, you've been lying, and we have witnesses, evidence, and motive. Ella, you can't escape justice. You'd better confess."
Hearing the police, Ella suddenly went berserk, pounding violently against the cell door. She screamed, "No. I won't plead guilty. I'll never plead guilty.
"I want to see my lawyer. No, wait, I need to see Mr. Drake. Yes, I want to see Luke Drake. He'll find a way to get me out of here."
Jane was in her studio, carefully repairing the shattered obsidian ring that Luke had broken, when an inexplicable chill ran down her spine. Then she sneezed.
Josie said, "Jane, what's wrong? You're sneezing even with the heater on. Don't catch a cold. Here, put this on." As she spoke, she draped her coat over Jane's shoulders.
Jane's eyes lit up at the sight of Josie. She exclaimed, "Josie, when did you get back?"
Jane wondered, 'Josie took her team abroad for negotiations. She clearly said she'd be gone for a few more days. So why is she suddenly back today?'
Josie explained, "I rushed back as soon as I heard about the attack at Ashwood University. I cut my business trip short just to check on you. Are you alright? I heard that vicious Ella was behind it.
"Come here, let me see if you are okay." As she spoke, she pulled Jane up and inspected her carefully from head to toe.
Suddenly, Josie's gaze landed on the shattered obsidian ring sitting on Jane's workbench. A flicker of recognition passed through her eyes. She said, "This ring looks so familiar."
