Hearing Josie's words, Jane's eyes lit up with sudden hope as she urgently grasped Josie's hand. She asked, "What's wrong, Josie? Have you seen this ring before?"
Josie nodded and said, "Yes, I've seen it before."
Jane's eyes flashed with excitement. She clutched Josie's hand tightly and pressed urgently, "Josie, tell me. Where did you see this ring?"
Josie was surprised by Jane's anxiety. Realizing that Jane had misunderstood, she quickly explained, "No, Jane, you've got it wrong.
"When I said I'd seen it, I meant that last year I saw a sketch and description of this ring in a rare art book my brother gave me.
"This is one of Skylor's most prized creations from his lifetime. You know, he was the unrivaled master in Xanoria at turning the ordinary into the extraordinary.
"With his unparalleled skill, everything he touched, be it jewelry, antiques, or paintings, became priceless treasures.
"His works are so rare. They're practically impossible to acquire even with immense wealth. My grandfather, an avid antique collector, was lucky enough to own just one piece by Skylor in his entire life.
"If I remember right, this ring is one of Skylor's most prized creations, crafted from an exceptionally rare obsidian.
"Last year, when I was getting ready to open this studio, my brother scoured every corner of the collectors' market before finally finding me a one-of-a-kind art book hand-drawn by Skylor.
"That book detailed the crafting techniques for this ring. Come to think of it, it even recorded when the ring was made, at least over a decade ago."
Jane hadn't expected the right to be so precious. She suddenly felt the obsidian ring grow heavier, as if its true worth now weighed upon her.
She thought, 'That mysterious man from that night at the club left this ring for me. Yet I failed to keep it well. What a pity.'
"Wait a second, Jane, how did you get a piece by Skylor?" Josie suddenly blurted out, her eyes widening in surprise.
Josie understood Jane's situation better than anyone. Though the Ritter family was wealthy and influential, Jane had long since lost their protection.
Josie pondered, 'When Jane and her mother were cast out of the Ritter family, they were forced to leave with nothing. There was no way the Ritter family would have let Jane keep the ring.'
Jane replied, "I just happened to come across it. What a pity. So what if it's Skylor's work? It still ended up shattered. Now it's beyond repair."
She didn't answer Josie directly. Instead, she lowered her gaze, her slightly trembling lashes veiling the emotions in her eyes.
Josie picked up on the disappointment in Jane's words. Though she had no idea how Jane had come by the ring, she couldn't just stand by and watch Jane's heartbreak.
She said, "Well, it's not entirely impossible to fix. Skylor's pieces were never meant to be repaired with ordinary methods.
"I remember that art book said they're assembled with specially formulated adhesives. Of course, you can't fix it here with just studio supplies. But I know just the place, someone there can restore it."
Jane looked up and asked, "Really?" A faint glimmer finally pierced through the dullness in her eyes.
Josie hesitated and then said, "Really. It's my second uncle, William. You've probably heard of him, the master imitator in Jovinia. If anyone can fix this ring, it's him. Come on, I'll take you to him."
Josie nodded and said, "Yes, I've seen it before."
