The so-called master imitator sounded like a compliment on the surface, but in truth, it meant a master forger, an expert at making counterfeits and knock-offs.
Josie had hesitated before mentioning William to Jane, and there was good reason for it.
In the Pace family, William was the black sheep. He was barely tolerated by his relatives and was one of the most notorious figures in the jewelry world.
After all, instead of sticking to the straight and narrow, he poured all his energy into counterfeiting.
However, thanks to his unconventional craftsmanship, William made a fortune. Although he didn't see eye to eye with the elders of the Pace family, he got along quite well with the younger generation.
He was an eccentric bachelor, still unmarried at his age and living alone in a villa on the outskirts of the city. Though single, he enjoyed a rather lavish lifestyle.
Jane accompanied Josie to a standalone villa on the outskirts of the city.
Not long after Josie rang the doorbell, the door swung open to reveal a disheveled, unkempt middle-aged man in his forties or fifties.
William said, "Josie, what brings you here today? Did you have another fight with your dad and come running to me for shelter?"
Josie replied, "Come on, William. Can't I just miss you and drop by for a visit?"
William chuckled, clearly not buying Josie's story. When he spotted Jane following behind Josie, his face visibly froze for a split second. He asked, "Who is she?"
Beneath his thick beard, his face seemed to flicker with a subtle shift, as if trying to mask his inner turmoil.
Josie said, "This is my good friend Jane Ritter. I've told you about her many times before. Surely you remember?"
Though Jane sensed something peculiar in William's gaze, she still offered him a respectful nod and said, "Hello, Mr. Pace."
William muttered, "Ritter? Then she can't be the one. Just a resemblance." He then gave Jane a nod, his stiff expression softening slightly.
"Alright, come in. We'll talk inside," he said.
Josie got straight to the point as soon as she stepped inside. She asked William to help restore the ring.
William didn't even glance at the ring before waving them away impatiently. He said, "You came all the way here for such a trivial matter? I won't waste my time on this. If you want it fixed, go find a professional outside. I'm busy."
With that, he strode straight into his workshop, shutting the door firmly behind him and leaving the two standing outside.
The sudden rejection left Josie and Jane standing there, dumbfounded.
Jane hesitated for a moment, then gently tugged at Josie's sleeve. She said, "Josie, maybe we should just call it a day. Let's head back and figure out another way."
Josie replied, "No way. We came all this way, and he didn't even look at the thing before refusing. Just wait, I'll make him change his mind." With that, she barged into the workshop uninvited, determined to pester William into submission.
Left alone outside, Jane had no choice but to settle onto the sofa. With nothing else to do, she casually glanced around, taking in her surroundings.
Jane noticed that the living room was filled with ornaments, paintings, and antiques. They were the kind of pieces that could easily fetch millions, even tens of millions of dollars, at auction.
Yet she recognized that several of them had already been acquired by top collectors. That meant most of what William had on display was probably fake.
But unless someone pointed it out, no one could tell they weren't real. It was evident that William's forgery skills were nothing short of extraordinary. His counterfeits could easily pass for the real thing.
Just then, Jane's phone rang, breaking the silence. When she saw it was the hospital calling, she picked up right away.
The other party said, "Ms. Ritter, we have good news. The hospital has confirmed that your mother's surgery can be scheduled in ten days. She's truly fortunate.
"This morning, Robert, a leading international authority in this field, happened to review her medical records and has agreed to perform the surgery personally.
"As we discussed last time, the surgery carries significant risks. However, with Robert personally operating, we can increase the success rate by at least 10%. The cost will remain the same as before, with no additional charges.
"If this works for you, you can come to the hospital tomorrow to complete the paperwork."
