Instantly, the scene from that day when Ella handed her the ring flashed through Jane's mind.
Jane said, "Mr. Pace, please double-check. Is this ring fake? I desperately need your confirmation, because I paid a fortune to redeem it."
William waved his hand dismissively and said, "No need to verify. I forged this ring myself. One glance and I can tell.
"Here, look. If you don't believe me, hold it up to the light and check right here. See this mark? There's a tiny Pace carved here. That's my signature."
As he spoke, William picked up one of the ring fragments and held it out to Jane.
Her hands trembling slightly, Jane took the obsidian fragment. She held it up to the light. And there it was, a faint, tiny Pace mark came into view.
Jane felt as if her world had just collapsed. A deafening ringing exploded in her ears, drowning out everything else. She stood frozen in place as if struck by lightning, clutching the ring fragment with trembling hands, her face deathly pale.
At that moment, Jane was overwhelmed with furious rage, the kind that came from being profoundly deceived, yet having no outlet to vent it. She was shaking all over, unable to control the fury that surged through her.
She thought, 'Ella! How could she do this to me? How could she use a worthless fake ring to swindle me out of 60 thousand? Doesn't she realize that my mother and I are already at our wits' end?
'She knew I was broke. She knew exactly how much that ring meant to me. So why the hell would she toy with me like this?'
Noticing that something was off with Jane, Josie quickly supported her. She asked with concern, "Jane, are you okay? You look so pale. You're scaring me."
Then she shouted at William, "William, what the hell is going on? Explain yourself. Why would you make a fake and trick my friend out of the blue? Who commissioned this from you?"
William could only look helpless as Josie scolded him. He honestly felt wronged. He'd always been in the counterfeit business; it wasn't like he specifically targeted Jane.
He explained, "It was the Judd women, Johnson's wife and daughter, who asked me. You know Johnson, the one who made his fortune thanks to his sister, Rose.
"I normally wouldn't stoop to work for their kind, but when they brought me that obsidian ring, an authentic piece from Skylor, I just couldn't resist the challenge. My hands were itching to try."
Josie's eyes widened in realization. She gasped, "The Judd women? Ella again. So it was those two all along. I knew it. Whenever Ella and her mom are involved, it's always trouble.
"Jane, your uncle's family is shameless. Your mom was the one who helped them build their fortune in the first place. How dare they steal from you? What gives them the right?"
Jane shut her eyes briefly. She clenched her fists so hard her nails dug into her palms. With a trembling, barely audible voice, she said, "I'm a damn fool. I let her con me out of 60 thousand for nothing.
"Ella and her mother knew damn well how much this ring meant to me. They knew I'd do anything to get it back. So they stole it and demanded 60 thousand. They said if I could come up with the cash, they'd return the ring."
Jane was no longer the Ritter heiress she once was. For her, 60 thousand was an impossible sum, practically a fortune she could only dream of now.
Yet Ella had the gall to make such a demand of Jane. And as if that wasn't enough, she even went so far as to have a fake ring made just to deceive Jane.
Jane thought, 'What a brilliant fucking scheme!'
Josie snapped, "Damn it! How dare they do this? That ring is yours, and they still dared to extort you. What shameless creatures.
"It's bad enough that they extorted you, but to return a fake to you and deceive you out of the ransom money. How utterly shameless."
Josie had a fiery temper. Now that she'd pieced together what had happened, she was grinding her teeth in fury.
She snarled, "Serves her right for getting arrested. A scammer like her deserves to be locked up a hundred times over. This is straight-up fraud. If only we had solid evidence, I'd have both her and her mother thrown in jail to rot."
Josie thought, 'Thank god Ella's already locked up in the detention center and will be standing trial in no time. Otherwise, there's no way I could ever let this slide.'
Just then, Jane's phone lit up. It was a call from the lawyer handling her kidnapping case.
Jane frowned as an uneasy feeling crept into her heart. With a slight tremble in her hand, she answered the phone. She said, "Hello, Mr. Parker."
